The highpriest4Ananiascommandedthosestandingbeside him 5to strike him on the mouth.

ThenPaulsaid to him, "God is going to strike you, 6you whitewashedwall! Do you 7sit to try me according to the Law, and in violation of the Laworder me to be struck?"

But the bystanderssaid, "Do you revileGod'shighpriest?

And Paulsaid, "I was not aware, brethren, that he was highpriest; for it is written, '8YOU SHALL NOT SPEAKEVIL OF A RULER OF YOUR PEOPLE.' "

But perceiving that onegroup were 9Sadducees and the otherPharisees, Paul began crying out in 10the Council, "11Brethren*, 12I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees; I am on trial for 13the hope and resurrection of the dead!"

As he saidthis, there occurred a dissension between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.

For 14the Sadduceessay that there is noresurrection, nor an angel, nor a spirit, but the Phariseesacknowledge them all.
