ThenPaulsaid to him, "God is going to strike you, 1you whitewashedwall! Do you 2sit to try me according to the Law, and in violation of the Laworder me to be struck?"

But the bystanderssaid, "Do you revileGod'shighpriest?

And Paulsaid, "I was not aware, brethren, that he was highpriest; for it is written, '3YOU SHALL NOT SPEAKEVIL OF A RULER OF YOUR PEOPLE.' "

But perceiving that onegroup were 4Sadducees and the otherPharisees, Paul began crying out in 5the Council, "6Brethren*, 7I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees; I am on trial for 8the hope and resurrection of the dead!"

As he saidthis, there occurred a dissension between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.

For 9the Sadduceessay that there is noresurrection, nor an angel, nor a spirit, but the Phariseesacknowledge them all.

And there occurred a greatuproar; and some of 10the scribes of the Pharisaicpartystood up and began to argueheatedly, saying, "11We findnothingwrong with thisman; 12suppose* a spiritor an angel has spoken to him?"

And as a greatdissension was developing, the commander was afraidPaul would be torn to pieces by them and ordered the troops to godown and take him away from them by force, and bring him into 13the barracks.

But on 14the night immediately following, the Lordstood at his side and said, "15Takecourage; for 16as you have 17solemnlywitnessed to My cause* at Jerusalem, so you mustwitness at Romealso."
A Conspiracy to Kill Paul
12 When it was day, 18the Jewsformed a conspiracy and 19boundthemselvesunder an oath, saying that they would neithereatnordrinkuntil they had killedPaul.
