1 Ben-adad ataca a Samaria<br />Por ese tiempo, Ben-adad, rey de Aram, movilizó a su ejército con el apoyo de treinta y dos reyes aliados, sus carros de guerra y sus caballos. Sitiaron a Samaria, la capital de Israel, y lanzaron ataques contra la ciudad.

2 Ben-adad envió mensajeros a la ciudad para que transmitieran el siguiente mensaje al rey Acab de Israel: «Ben-adad dice:

3 “¡Tu plata y tu oro son míos, igual que tus esposas y tus mejores hijos!”».

4 «Está bien, mi señor el rey —respondió el rey de Israel—. ¡Todo lo que tengo es tuyo!».

5 Pronto los mensajeros de Ben-adad regresaron y dijeron: «Ben-adad dice: “Ya te he exigido que me des tu plata, tu oro, tus esposas y tus hijos;

6 pero mañana a esta hora, enviaré a mis funcionarios a registrar tu palacio y las casas de tus funcionarios. ¡Se llevarán todo lo que más valoras!”».

7 Entonces Acab mandó llamar a todos los ancianos del reino y les dijo:<br />—¡Miren cómo este hombre está causando problemas! Ya accedí a su exigencia de darle mis esposas, mis hijos, mi plata y mi oro.

8 —No cedas ante ninguna otra de sus exigencias —le aconsejaron todos los ancianos y todo el pueblo.

9 Así que Acab dijo a los mensajeros de Ben-adad: «Díganle esto a mi señor el rey: “Te daré todo lo que pediste la primera vez, pero no puedo aceptar tu última exigencia”». Entonces los mensajeros le llevaron la respuesta a Ben-adad.

10 Con eso Ben-adad le envió otro mensaje a Acab, que decía: «Que los dioses me hieran e incluso me maten si de Samaria queda polvo suficiente para darle un puñado a cada uno de mis soldados».

11 El rey de Israel le envió esta respuesta: «Un guerrero que está preparándose con su espada para salir a pelear no debería presumir como un guerrero que ya ganó».

12 Ben-adad y los otros reyes recibieron la respuesta de Acab mientras bebían en sus carpas.<br /> «¡Prepárense para atacar!», ordenó Ben-adad a sus oficiales. Entonces se prepararon para atacar la ciudad.

13 Acab derrota a Ben-adad<br />Entonces un profeta fue a ver a Acab, rey de Israel, y le dijo:<br />—Esto dice el Señor<br />: “¿Ves todas esas fuerzas enemigas? Hoy las entregaré en tus manos. Así sabrás que yo soy el Señor<br />”.

14 —¿Cómo lo hará? —preguntó Acab.<br />El profeta contestó:<br />—Esto dice el Señor<br />: “Lo harán las tropas de los comandantes provinciales”.<br />—¿Debemos atacar nosotros primero? —preguntó Acab.<br />—Sí —contestó el profeta.

15 Entonces Acab reunió a las tropas de los doscientos treinta y dos comandantes de las provincias. Luego llamó al resto del ejército de Israel, unos siete mil hombres.

16 Cerca del mediodía, mientras Ben-adad y los treinta y dos reyes aliados aún estaban en sus carpas bebiendo hasta emborracharse,

20 Cada soldado israelita mató a su oponente arameo, y de pronto todo el ejército arameo sintió pánico y huyó. Los israelitas persiguieron a los arameos, pero el rey Ben-adad y algunos de sus conductores de carros escaparon a caballo.

21 Sin embargo, el rey de Israel destruyó al resto de los caballos y carros de guerra y masacró a los arameos.

22 Después el profeta le dijo al rey Acab: «Prepárate para otro ataque; empieza a planificar desde ahora, porque el rey de Aram regresará la próxima primavera».

23 Segundo ataque de Ben-adad<br />Después de la derrota, los oficiales de Ben-adad le dijeron: «Los dioses de los israelitas son dioses de las montañas, por eso ganaron; pero podemos vencerlos fácilmente en las llanuras.

24 ¡Solo que esta vez reemplaza a los reyes con generales!

25 Recluta otro ejército como el que perdiste. Consíguenos la misma cantidad de caballos, carros de guerra y hombres, y nosotros pelearemos contra los israelitas en las llanuras. Sin duda los venceremos». Así que el rey Ben-adad hizo lo que ellos le sugirieron.

26 La primavera siguiente, llamó al ejército arameo y avanzó contra Israel, pero esta vez en Afec.

27 Entonces Israel reunió a su ejército, montó líneas de abastecimiento y salió a pelear. Pero el ejército de Israel parecía dos pequeños rebaños de cabras en comparación con el inmenso ejército arameo, ¡que llenaba la campiña!

28 Entonces el hombre de Dios fue a ver al rey de Israel y le dijo: «Esto dice el Señor<br />: “Los arameos han dicho: ‘El Señor<br /> es un dios de las montañas y no de las llanuras’. Así que derrotaré a este gran ejército por ti. Entonces sabrás que yo soy el Señor<br />”».

29 Los dos ejércitos acamparon, uno frente al otro, durante siete días. El séptimo día comenzó la batalla. En un solo día los israelitas mataron a cien mil soldados arameos de infantería.

30 El resto huyó a la ciudad de Afec, pero la muralla les cayó encima y mató a otros veintisiete mil de ellos. Ben-adad huyó a la ciudad y se escondió en un cuarto secreto.

31 Los oficiales de Ben-adad le dijeron: «Hemos oído, señor, que los reyes de Israel son compasivos. Entonces pongámonos tela áspera alrededor de la cintura y sogas en la cabeza en señal de humillación, y rindámonos ante el rey de Israel. Tal vez así le perdone la vida».

32 Entonces se pusieron tela áspera y sogas, y fueron a ver al rey de Israel, a quien le suplicaron:<br />—Su siervo Ben-adad dice: “Le ruego que me perdone la vida”.<br />El rey de Israel respondió:<br />—¿Todavía vive? ¡Él es mi hermano!

33 Los hombres tomaron la respuesta como una buena señal y, aprovechando esas palabras, enseguida le respondieron:<br />—¡Sí, su hermano Ben-adad!<br />—¡Vayan a traerlo! —les dijo el rey de Israel.<br />Cuando Ben-adad llegó, Acab lo invitó a subir a su carro de guerra.

34 Ben-adad le dijo:<br />—Te devolveré las ciudades que mi padre le quitó a tu padre, y puedes establecer lugares de comercio en Damasco, como hizo mi padre en Samaria.<br />Entonces Acab le dijo:<br />—Te dejaré en libertad con estas condiciones.<br />Así que hicieron un nuevo tratado y Ben-adad quedó en libertad.

35 Un profeta condena a Acab<br />Mientras tanto, el Señor<br /> le ordenó a un miembro del grupo de profetas que le dijera a otro: «¡Golpéame!»; pero el hombre se negó a golpearlo.

36 Entonces el profeta le dijo: «Como no obedeciste la voz del Señor<br />, un león te matará apenas te separes de mí». Cuando el hombre se fue, sucedió que un león lo atacó y lo mató.

37 Luego el profeta se dirigió a otro hombre y le dijo: «¡Golpéame!». Así que el hombre lo golpeó y lo hirió.

38 El profeta se puso una venda en los ojos para que no lo reconocieran y se quedó junto al camino, esperando al rey.

39 Cuando el rey pasó, el profeta lo llamó:<br />—Señor, yo estaba en lo más reñido de la batalla, cuando de pronto un hombre me trajo un prisionero y me dijo: “Vigila a este hombre; si por alguna razón se te escapa, ¡pagarás con tu vida o con una multa de treinta y cuatro kilos<br /> de plata!”;

40 pero mientras yo estaba ocupado en otras cosas, ¡el prisionero desapareció!<br />—Bueno, fue tu culpa —respondió el rey—. Tú mismo has firmado tu propia sentencia.

41 Enseguida el profeta se quitó la venda de los ojos, y el rey lo reconoció como uno de los profetas.

42 El profeta le dijo:<br />—Esto dice el Señor<br />: “Por haberle perdonado la vida al hombre que yo dije que había que destruir<br /> ahora tú morirás en su lugar, y tu pueblo morirá en lugar de su pueblo”.

43 Entonces el rey de Israel volvió a su casa en Samaria, enojado y de mal humor.

1 Now Ben-Hadad king of Aram mustered his entire army. Accompanied by thirty-two kings with their horses and chariots, he went up and besieged Samaria and attacked it.

2 He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel, saying, “This is what Ben-Hadad says:

3 ‘Your silver and gold are mine, and the best of your wives and children are mine.’ ”

4 The king of Israel answered, “Just as you say, my lord the king. I and all I have are yours.”

5 The messengers came again and said, “This is what Ben-Hadad says: ‘I sent to demand your silver and gold, your wives and your children.

6 But about this time tomorrow I am going to send my officials to search your palace and the houses of your officials. They will seize everything you value and carry it away.’ ”

7 The king of Israel summoned all the elders of the land and said to them, “See how this man is looking for trouble! When he sent for my wives and my children, my silver and my gold, I did not refuse him.”

8 The elders and the people all answered, “Don’t listen to him or agree to his demands.”

9 So he replied to Ben-Hadad’s messengers, “Tell my lord the king, ‘Your servant will do all you demanded the first time, but this demand I cannot meet.’ ” They left and took the answer back to Ben-Hadad.

10 Then Ben-Hadad sent another message to Ahab: “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if enough dust remains in Samaria to give each of my men a handful.”

11 The king of Israel answered, “Tell him: ‘One who puts on his armor should not boast like one who takes it off.’ ”

12 Ben-Hadad heard this message while he and the kings were drinking in their tents, and he ordered his men: “Prepare to attack.” So they prepared to attack the city.

13 Meanwhile a prophet came to Ahab king of Israel and announced, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Do you see this vast army? I will give it into your hand today, and then you will know that I am the LORD.’ ”

14 “But who will do this?” asked Ahab. The prophet replied, “This is what the LORD says: ‘The junior officers under the provincial commanders will do it.’ ” “And who will start the battle?” he asked. The prophet answered, “You will.”

15 So Ahab summoned the 232 junior officers under the provincial commanders. Then he assembled the rest of the Israelites, 7,000 in all.

16 They set out at noon while Ben-Hadad and the 32 kings allied with him were in their tents getting drunk.

17 The junior officers under the provincial commanders went out first. Now Ben-Hadad had dispatched scouts, who reported, “Men are advancing from Samaria.”

18 He said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive; if they have come out for war, take them alive.”

19 The junior officers under the provincial commanders marched out of the city with the army behind them

20 and each one struck down his opponent. At that, the Arameans fled, with the Israelites in pursuit. But Ben-Hadad king of Aram escaped on horseback with some of his horsemen.

21 The king of Israel advanced and overpowered the horses and chariots and inflicted heavy losses on the Arameans.

22 Afterward, the prophet came to the king of Israel and said, “Strengthen your position and see what must be done, because next spring the king of Aram will attack you again.”

23 Meanwhile, the officials of the king of Aram advised him, “Their gods are gods of the hills. That is why they were too strong for us. But if we fight them on the plains, surely we will be stronger than they.

24 Do this: Remove all the kings from their commands and replace them with other officers.

25 You must also raise an army like the one you lost—horse for horse and chariot for chariot—so we can fight Israel on the plains. Then surely we will be stronger than they.” He agreed with them and acted accordingly.

26 The next spring Ben-Hadad mustered the Arameans and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.

27 When the Israelites were also mustered and given provisions, they marched out to meet them. The Israelites camped opposite them like two small flocks of goats, while the Arameans covered the countryside.

28 The man of God came up and told the king of Israel, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because the Arameans think the LORD is a god of the hills and not a god of the valleys, I will deliver this vast army into your hands, and you will know that I am the LORD.’ ”

29 For seven days they camped opposite each other, and on the seventh day the battle was joined. The Israelites inflicted a hundred thousand casualties on the Aramean foot soldiers in one day.

30 The rest of them escaped to the city of Aphek, where the wall collapsed on twenty-seven thousand of them. And Ben-Hadad fled to the city and hid in an inner room.

31 His officials said to him, “Look, we have heard that the kings of Israel are merciful. Let us go to the king of Israel with sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will spare your life.”

32 Wearing sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, they went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-Hadad says: ‘Please let me live.’ ” The king answered, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”

33 The men took this as a good sign and were quick to pick up his word. “Yes, your brother Ben-Hadad!” they said. “Go and get him,” the king said. When Ben-Hadad came out, Ahab had him come up into his chariot.

34 “I will return the cities my father took from your father,” Ben-Hadad offered. “You may set up your own market areas in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.” Ahab said, “On the basis of a treaty I will set you free.” So he made a treaty with him, and let him go.

35 By the word of the LORD one of the company of the prophets said to his companion, “Strike me with your weapon,” but he refused.

36 So the prophet said, “Because you have not obeyed the LORD, as soon as you leave me a lion will kill you.” And after the man went away, a lion found him and killed him.

37 The prophet found another man and said, “Strike me, please.” So the man struck him and wounded him.

38 Then the prophet went and stood by the road waiting for the king. He disguised himself with his headband down over his eyes.

39 As the king passed by, the prophet called out to him, “Your servant went into the thick of the battle, and someone came to me with a captive and said, ‘Guard this man. If he is missing, it will be your life for his life, or you must pay a talent of silver.’

40 While your servant was busy here and there, the man disappeared.” “That is your sentence,” the king of Israel said. “You have pronounced it yourself.”

41 Then the prophet quickly removed the headband from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets.

42 He said to the king, “This is what the LORD says: ‘You have set free a man I had determined should die. Therefore it is your life for his life, your people for his people.’ ”

43 Sullen and angry, the king of Israel went to his palace in Samaria.
