1 Kings 17:1-16

CEB 1 Elijah from Tishbe, who was one of the settlers in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As surely as the LORD lives, Israel's God, the one I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain these years unless I say so." NIV 1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.” CEB 2 Then the LORD's word came to Elijah: NIV 2 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah: CEB 3 Go from here and turn east. Hide by the Cherith Brook that faces the Jordan River. NIV 3 “Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. CEB 4 You can drink from the brook. I have also ordered the ravens to provide for you there. NIV 4 You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there.” CEB 5 Elijah went and did just what the LORD said. He stayed by the Cherith Brook that faced the Jordan River. NIV 5 So he did what the LORD had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there. CEB 6 The ravens brought bread and meat in the mornings and evenings. He drank from the Cherith Brook. NIV 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook. CEB 7 After a while the brook dried up because there was no rain in the land. NIV 7 Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land. CEB 8 The LORD's word came to Elijah: NIV 8 Then the word of the LORD came to him: CEB 9 Get up and go to Zarephath near Sidon and stay there. I have ordered a widow there to take care of you. NIV 9 “Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.” CEB 10 Elijah left and went to Zarephath. As he came to the town gate, he saw a widow collecting sticks. He called out to her, "Please get a little water for me in this cup so I can drink." NIV 10 So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?” CEB 11 She went to get some water. He then said to her, "Please get me a piece of bread." NIV 11 As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.” CEB 12 "As surely as the LORD your God lives," she replied, "I don't have any food; only a handful of flour in a jar and a bit of oil in a bottle. Look at me. I'm collecting two sticks so that I can make some food for myself and my son. We'll eat the last of the food and then die." NIV 12 “As surely as the LORD your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.” CEB 13 Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid! Go and do what you said. Only make a little loaf of bread for me first. Then bring it to me. You can make something for yourself and your son after that. NIV 13 Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. CEB 14 This is what Israel's God, the LORD, says: The jar of flour won't decrease and the bottle of oil won't run out until the day the LORD sends rain on the earth." NIV 14 For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain on the land.’ ” CEB 15 The widow went and did what Elijah said. So the widow, Elijah, and the widow's household ate for many days. NIV 15 She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. CEB 16 The jar of flour didn't decrease nor did the bottle of oil run out, just as the LORD spoke through Elijah. NIV 16 For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah.
