1 Thessalonians 5:1-16

GNT 1 There is no need to write you, friends, about the times and occasions when these things will happen. NIV 1 Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, GNT 2 For you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come as a thief comes at night. NIV 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. GNT 3 When people say, "Everything is quiet and safe," then suddenly destruction will hit them! It will come as suddenly as the pains that come upon a woman in labor, and people will not escape. NIV 3 While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. GNT 4 But you, friends, are not in the darkness, and the Day should not take you by surprise like a thief. NIV 4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. GNT 5 All of you are people who belong to the light, who belong to the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. NIV 5 You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. GNT 6 So then, we should not be sleeping like the others; we should be awake and sober. NIV 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. GNT 7 It is at night when people sleep; it is at night when they get drunk. NIV 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. GNT 8 But we belong to the day, and we should be sober. We must wear faith and love as a breastplate, and our hope of salvation as a helmet. NIV 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. GNT 9 God did not choose us to suffer his anger, but to possess salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, NIV 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. GNT 10 who died for us in order that we might live together with him, whether we are alive or dead when he comes. NIV 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. GNT 11 And so encourage one another and help one another, just as you are now doing. NIV 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. GNT 12 We beg you, our friends, to pay proper respect to those who work among you, who guide and instruct you in the Christian life. NIV 12 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. GNT 13 Treat them with the greatest respect and love because of the work they do. Be at peace among yourselves. NIV 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. GNT 14 We urge you, our friends, to warn the idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. NIV 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. GNT 15 See that no one pays back wrong for wrong, but at all times make it your aim to do good to one another and to all people. NIV 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else. GNT 16 Be joyful always, NIV 16 Rejoice always,
