1 Después de esto aconteció que David consultó al SEÑOR, diciendo: ¿Subiré a alguna de las ciudades de Judá? Y el SEÑOR le respondió: Sube. Y David volvió a decir: ¿A dónde subiré? Y él le dijo: A Hebrón.

In the course of time, David inquired of the LORD. “Shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” he asked. The LORD said, “Go up.” David asked, “Where shall I go?” “To Hebron,” the LORD answered.
2 Y David subió allá, y con él sus dos mujeres, Ahinoam jezreelita y Abigail, la <I>que fue</I> mujer de Nabal del Carmelo.

So David went up there with his two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel.
3 Y llevó también David consigo los varones que con él habían estado, cada uno con su familia; los cuales moraron en las ciudades de Hebrón.

David also took the men who were with him, each with his family, and they settled in Hebron and its towns.
4 Y vinieron los varones de Judá, y ungieron allí a David por rey sobre la casa de Judá. Y dieron aviso a David, diciendo: Los de Jabes de Galaad <I>son</I> los que sepultaron a Saúl.

Then the men of Judah came to Hebron, and there they anointed David king over the tribe of Judah. When David was told that it was the men from Jabesh Gilead who had buried Saul,
5 Y envió David mensajeros a los de Jabes de Galaad, diciéndoles: Benditos <I>seáis</I> vosotros del SEÑOR, que habéis hecho esta misericordia con vuestro señor Saúl en haberle dado sepultura.

he sent messengers to them to say to them, “The LORD bless you for showing this kindness to Saul your master by burying him.
6 Ahora pues, el SEÑOR haga con vosotros misericordia y verdad; y yo también os haré bien por esto que habéis hecho.

May the LORD now show you kindness and faithfulness, and I too will show you the same favor because you have done this.
7 Esfuércense pues ahora vuestras manos, y sed valientes; pues que muerto Saúl vuestro señor, los de la casa de Judá me han ungido por rey sobre ellos.

Now then, be strong and brave, for Saul your master is dead, and the people of Judah have anointed me king over them.”
8 Mas Abner hijo de Ner, general del ejército de Saúl, tomó a Is-boset hijo de Saúl, y lo hizo pasar al real.

Meanwhile, Abner son of Ner, the commander of Saul’s army, had taken Ish-Bosheth son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim.
9 Y lo alzó por rey sobre Galaad, y sobre Gesuri, y sobre Jezreel, y sobre Efraín, y sobre Benjamín, y sobre todo Israel.

He made him king over Gilead, Ashuri and Jezreel, and also over Ephraim, Benjamin and all Israel.
10 De cuarenta años era Is-boset hijo de Saúl, cuando comenzó a reinar sobre Israel; y reinó dos años. Sólo la casa de Judá seguía a David.

Ish-Bosheth son of Saul was forty years old when he became king over Israel, and he reigned two years. The tribe of Judah, however, remained loyal to David.
11 Y fue el número de los días que David reinó en Hebrón sobre la casa de Judá, siete años y seis meses.

The length of time David was king in Hebron over Judah was seven years and six months.
12 Y Abner hijo de Ner salió del real a Gabaón con los siervos de Is-boset hijo de Saúl.

Abner son of Ner, together with the men of Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, left Mahanaim and went to Gibeon.
13 Y Joab hijo de Sarvia, y los criados de David, salieron y los encontraron junto al estanque de Gabaón; y cuando se juntaron, se pararon los unos a un lado del estanque, y los otros al otro.

Joab son of Zeruiah and David’s men went out and met them at the pool of Gibeon. One group sat down on one side of the pool and one group on the other side.
14 Y dijo Abner a Joab: Levántense ahora los jóvenes, y maniobren delante de nosotros. Y Joab respondió: Levántense.

Then Abner said to Joab, “Let’s have some of the young men get up and fight hand to hand in front of us.” “All right, let them do it,” Joab said.
15 Entonces se levantaron, y en número de doce, pasaron de Benjamín de la parte de Is-boset hijo de Saúl; y doce de los siervos de David.

So they stood up and were counted off—twelve men for Benjamin and Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, and twelve for David.
16 Y cada uno echó mano de la cabeza de su compañero, y <I>le metió</I> su espada por el costado de su compañero, y cayeron a una; y fue llamado aquel lugar, Helcat-hazurim (<I>la heredad de los fuertes</I> ), el cual <I> está</I> en Gabaón.

Then each man grabbed his opponent by the head and thrust his dagger into his opponent’s side, and they fell down together. So that place in Gibeon was called Helkath Hazzurim.
17 Y hubo aquel día una batalla muy recia, donde Abner y los varones de Israel fueron vencidos de los siervos de David.

The battle that day was very fierce, and Abner and the Israelites were defeated by David’s men.
18 Y estaban allí los tres hijos de Sarvia: Joab, y Abisai, y Asael. Este Asael era suelto de pies como un corzo del monte.

The three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai and Asahel. Now Asahel was as fleet-footed as a wild gazelle.
19 El cual Asael siguió a Abner, yendo tras de él sin apartarse a diestra ni a siniestra.

He chased Abner, turning neither to the right nor to the left as he pursued him.
20 Y Abner miró atrás, y dijo: ¿No eres tú Asael? Y él respondió: Sí.

Abner looked behind him and asked, “Is that you, Asahel?” “It is,” he answered.
21 Entonces Abner le dijo: Apártate a la derecha o a la izquierda, y agárrate alguno de los jóvenes, y toma para ti sus despojos. Pero Asael no quiso apartarse de en pos de él.

Then Abner said to him, “Turn aside to the right or to the left; take on one of the young men and strip him of his weapons.” But Asahel would not stop chasing him.
22 Y Abner volvió a decir a Asael: Apártate de en pos de mí, porque te heriré <I>derribándote</I> en tierra, y <I>después</I> ¿cómo levantaré mi rostro a tu hermano Joab?

Again Abner warned Asahel, “Stop chasing me! Why should I strike you down? How could I look your brother Joab in the face?”
23 Y no queriendo él irse, lo hirió Abner con el regatón de la lanza por la quinta <I>costilla</I> , y le salió la lanza por las espaldas, y cayó allí, y murió en aquel mismo sitio. Y todos los que venían por aquel lugar donde Asael había caído y estaba muerto, se paraban.

But Asahel refused to give up the pursuit; so Abner thrust the butt of his spear into Asahel’s stomach, and the spear came out through his back. He fell there and died on the spot. And every man stopped when he came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died.
24 Mas Joab y Abisai siguieron a Abner; y se les puso el sol cuando llegaron al collado de Amma, que <I>está</I> delante de Gía, junto al camino del desierto de Gabaón.

But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner, and as the sun was setting, they came to the hill of Ammah, near Giah on the way to the wasteland of Gibeon.
25 Y se juntaron los hijos de Benjamín en un escuadrón con Abner, y se pararon en la cumbre del collado.

Then the men of Benjamin rallied behind Abner. They formed themselves into a group and took their stand on top of a hill.
26 Y Abner dio voces a Joab, diciendo: ¿Consumirá el cuchillo perpetuamente? ¿No sabes tú que al cabo sigue amargura? ¿Hasta cuándo no has de decir al pueblo que se vuelvan de seguir a sus hermanos?

Abner called out to Joab, “Must the sword devour forever? Don’t you realize that this will end in bitterness? How long before you order your men to stop pursuing their fellow Israelites?”
27 Y Joab respondió: Vive Dios que si no hubieras hablado, ya desde esta mañana el pueblo hubiera dejado de seguir a sus hermanos.

Joab answered, “As surely as God lives, if you had not spoken, the men would have continued pursuing them until morning.”
28 Entonces Joab tocó el cuerno, y todo el pueblo se detuvo, y no siguió más a los de Israel, ni peleó más.

So Joab blew the trumpet, and all the troops came to a halt; they no longer pursued Israel, nor did they fight anymore.
29 Y Abner y los suyos caminaron por la campiña toda aquella noche, y pasando el Jordán cruzaron por todo Bet-horón, y llegaron al real.

All that night Abner and his men marched through the Arabah. They crossed the Jordan, continued through the morning hours and came to Mahanaim.
30 Joab también volvió de seguir a Abner, y juntando todo el pueblo, faltaron de los siervos de David diecinueve hombres, y Asael.

Then Joab stopped pursuing Abner and assembled the whole army. Besides Asahel, nineteen of David’s men were found missing.
31 Mas los siervos de David hirieron de los de Benjamín y de los de Abner, trescientos sesenta hombres, <I>que</I> murieron. Tomaron <I>luego</I> a Asael, y lo sepultaron en el sepulcro de su padre en Belén.

But David’s men had killed three hundred and sixty Benjamites who were with Abner.
32 Y caminaron toda aquella noche Joab y los suyos, y les amaneció en Hebrón.

They took Asahel and buried him in his father’s tomb at Bethlehem. Then Joab and his men marched all night and arrived at Hebron by daybreak.
