Isaiah 1

NRSA 1 The vision of Isaiah son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. NIV 1 The vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah son of Amoz saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. NRSA 2 Hear, O heavens, and listen, O earth; for the Lord has spoken: I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me. NIV 2 Hear me, you heavens! Listen, earth! For the LORD has spoken: “I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me. NRSA 3 The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master's crib; but Israel does not know, my people do not understand. NIV 3 The ox knows its master, the donkey its owner’s manger, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand.” NRSA 4 Ah, sinful nation, people laden with iniquity, offspring who do evil, children who deal corruptly, who have forsaken the Lord, who have despised the Holy One of Israel, who are utterly estranged! NIV 4 Woe to the sinful nation, a people whose guilt is great, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the LORD; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him. NRSA 5 Why do you seek further beatings? Why do you continue to rebel? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. NIV 5 Why should you be beaten anymore? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted. NRSA 6 From the sole of the foot even to the head, there is no soundness in it, but bruises and sores and bleeding wounds; they have not been drained, or bound up, or softened with oil. NIV 6 From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness— only wounds and welts and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged or soothed with olive oil. NRSA 7 Your country lies desolate, your cities are burned with fire; in your very presence aliens devour your land; it is desolate, as overthrown by foreigners. NIV 7 Your country is desolate, your cities burned with fire; your fields are being stripped by foreigners right before you, laid waste as when overthrown by strangers. NRSA 8 And daughter Zion is left like a booth in a vineyard, like a shelter in a cucumber field, like a besieged city. NIV 8 Daughter Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut in a cucumber field, like a city under siege. NRSA 9 If the Lord of hosts had not left us a few survivors, we would have been like Sodom, and become like Gomorrah. NIV 9 Unless the LORD Almighty had left us some survivors, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah. NRSA 10 Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom! Listen to the teaching of our God, you people of Gomorrah! NIV 10 Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the instruction of our God, you people of Gomorrah! NRSA 11 What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the Lord; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats. NIV 11 “The multitude of your sacrifices— what are they to me?” says the LORD. “I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats. NRSA 12 When you come to appear before me, who asked this from your hand? Trample my courts no more; NIV 12 When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts? NRSA 13 bringing offerings is futile; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and sabbath and calling of convocation— I cannot endure solemn assemblies with iniquity. NIV 13 Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations— I cannot bear your worthless assemblies. NRSA 14 Your new moons and your appointed festivals my soul hates; they have become a burden to me, I am weary of bearing them. NIV 14 Your New Moon feasts and your appointed festivals I hate with all my being. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them. NRSA 15 When you stretch out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood. NIV 15 When you spread out your hands in prayer, I hide my eyes from you; even when you offer many prayers, I am not listening. Your hands are full of blood! NRSA 16 Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil, NIV 16 Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong. NRSA 17 learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow. NIV 17 Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed.Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow. NRSA 18 Come now, let us argue it out, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be like snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. NIV 18 “Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. NRSA 19 If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; NIV 19 If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good things of the land; NRSA 20 but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. NIV 20 but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword.” For the mouth of the LORD has spoken. NRSA 21 How the faithful city has become a whore! She that was full of justice, righteousness lodged in her— but now murderers! NIV 21 See how the faithful city has become a prostitute! She once was full of justice; righteousness used to dwell in her— but now murderers! NRSA 22 Your silver has become dross, your wine is mixed with water. NIV 22 Your silver has become dross, your choice wine is diluted with water. NRSA 23 Your princes are rebels and companions of thieves. Everyone loves a bribe and runs after gifts. They do not defend the orphan, and the widow's cause does not come before them. NIV 23 Your rulers are rebels, partners with thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow’s case does not come before them. NRSA 24 Therefore says the Sovereign, the Lord of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel: Ah, I will pour out my wrath on my enemies, and avenge myself on my foes! NIV 24 Therefore the Lord, the LORD Almighty, the Mighty One of Israel, declares: “Ah! I will vent my wrath on my foes and avenge myself on my enemies. NRSA 25 I will turn my hand against you; I will smelt away your dross as with lye and remove all your alloy. NIV 25 I will turn my hand against you;I will thoroughly purge away your dross and remove all your impurities. NRSA 26 And I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city. NIV 26 I will restore your leaders as in days of old, your rulers as at the beginning. Afterward you will be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City.” NRSA 27 Zion shall be redeemed by justice, and those in her who repent, by righteousness. NIV 27 Zion will be delivered with justice, her penitent ones with righteousness. NRSA 28 But rebels and sinners shall be destroyed together, and those who forsake the Lord shall be consumed. NIV 28 But rebels and sinners will both be broken, and those who forsake the LORD will perish. NRSA 29 For you shall be ashamed of the oaks in which you delighted; and you shall blush for the gardens that you have chosen. NIV 29 “You will be ashamed because of the sacred oaks in which you have delighted; you will be disgraced because of the gardens that you have chosen. NRSA 30 For you shall be like an oak whose leaf withers, and like a garden without water. NIV 30 You will be like an oak with fading leaves, like a garden without water. NRSA 31 The strong shall become like tinder, and their work like a spark; they and their work shall burn together, with no one to quench them. NIV 31 The mighty man will become tinder and his work a spark; both will burn together, with no one to quench the fire.”
