Judges 1

RSVA 1 After the death of Joshua the people of Israel inquired of the LORD, "Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?" NIV 1 After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the LORD, “Who of us is to go up first to fight against the Canaanites?” RSVA 2 The LORD said, "Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand." NIV 2 The LORD answered, “Judah shall go up; I have given the land into their hands.” RSVA 3 And Judah said to Simeon his brother, "Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with you into the territory allotted to you." So Simeon went with him. NIV 3 The men of Judah then said to the Simeonites their fellow Israelites, “Come up with us into the territory allotted to us, to fight against the Canaanites. We in turn will go with you into yours.” So the Simeonites went with them. RSVA 4 Then Judah went up and the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Per'izzites into their hand; and they defeated ten thousand of them at Bezek. NIV 4 When Judah attacked, the LORD gave the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek. RSVA 5 They came upon Ado'ni-be'zek at Bezek, and fought against him, and defeated the Canaanites and the Per'izzites. NIV 5 It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites. RSVA 6 Ado'ni-be'zek fled; but they pursued him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes. NIV 6 Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes. RSVA 7 And Ado'ni-be'zek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and their great toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has requited me." And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there. NIV 7 Then Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them.” They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there. RSVA 8 And the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire. NIV 8 The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem also and took it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire. RSVA 9 And afterward the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who dwelt in the hill country, in the Negeb, and in the lowland. NIV 9 After that, Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites living in the hill country, the Negev and the western foothills. RSVA 10 And Judah went against the Canaanites who dwelt in Hebron (now the name of Hebron was formerly Kir'iath-ar'ba); and they defeated She'shai and Ahi'man and Talmai. NIV 10 They advanced against the Canaanites living in Hebron (formerly called Kiriath Arba) and defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai. RSVA 11 From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir was formerly Kir'iath-se'pher. NIV 11 From there they advanced against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher). RSVA 12 And Caleb said, "He who attacks Kir'iath-se'pher and takes it, I will give him Achsah my daughter as wife." NIV 12 And Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.” RSVA 13 And Oth'ni-el the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife. NIV 13 Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage. RSVA 14 When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field; and she alighted from her ass, and Caleb said to her, "What do you wish?" NIV 14 One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What can I do for you?” RSVA 15 She said to him, "Give me a present; since you have set me in the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water." And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs. NIV 15 She replied, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs. RSVA 16 And the descendants of the Ken'ite, Moses' father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad; and they went and settled with the people. NIV 16 The descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up from the City of Palms with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad. RSVA 17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. So the name of the city was called Hormah. NIV 17 Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites their fellow Israelites and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally destroyed the city. Therefore it was called Hormah. RSVA 18 Judah also took Gaza with its territory, and Ash'kelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory. NIV 18 Judah also took Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron—each city with its territory. RSVA 19 And the LORD was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but he could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain, because they had chariots of iron. NIV 19 The LORD was with the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had chariots fitted with iron. RSVA 20 And Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said; and he drove out from it the three sons of Anak. NIV 20 As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak. RSVA 21 But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jeb'usites who dwelt in Jerusalem; so the Jeb'usites have dwelt with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day. NIV 21 The Benjamites, however, did not drive out the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites. RSVA 22 The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel; and the LORD was with them. NIV 22 Now the tribes of Joseph attacked Bethel, and the LORD was with them. RSVA 23 And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Bethel. (Now the name of the city was formerly Luz.) NIV 23 When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz), RSVA 24 And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, "Pray, show us the way into the city, and we will deal kindly with you." NIV 24 the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, “Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well.” RSVA 25 And he showed them the way into the city; and they smote the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go. NIV 25 So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared the man and his whole family. RSVA 26 And the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city, and called its name Luz; that is its name to this day. NIV 26 He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he built a city and called it Luz, which is its name to this day. RSVA 27 Manas'seh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-she'an and its villages, or Ta'a-nach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megid'do and its villages; but the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land. NIV 27 But Manasseh did not drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor or Ibleam or Megiddo and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that land. NIV 29 Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live there among them. RSVA 30 Zeb'ulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Na'halol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became subject to forced labor. NIV 30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun did subject them to forced labor. RSVA 31 Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, or of Achzib, or of Helbah, or of Aphik, or of Rehob; NIV 31 Nor did Asher drive out those living in Akko or Sidon or Ahlab or Akzib or Helbah or Aphek or Rehob. RSVA 32 but the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out. NIV 32 The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out. RSVA 33 Naph'tali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-she'mesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, but dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-she'mesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them. NIV 33 Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh or Beth Anath; but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them. NIV 35 And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres, Aijalon and Shaalbim, but when the power of the tribes of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor. RSVA 36 And the border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrab'bim, from Sela and upward. NIV 36 The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass to Sela and beyond.
