1 El Señor<br /> le dio este mensaje a Sofonías, cuando Josías, hijo de Amón, era rey de Judá. Sofonías fue hijo de Cusi, hijo de Gedalías, hijo de Amarías, hijo de Ezequías.

2 Juicio venidero contra Judá<br />«Arrasaré con todo lo que hay<br />sobre la faz de la tierra —dice el Señor<br />—.

3 Arrasaré con personas y animales por igual;<br />arrasaré con las aves de los cielos y con los peces del mar.<br />Reduciré a los malvados a un montón de escombros<br />y borraré a la humanidad de la faz de la tierra —dice el Señor<br />—.

4 Aplastaré a Judá y a Jerusalén con mi puño<br />y destruiré todo rastro del culto a Baal.<br />Acabaré con todos los sacerdotes idólatras,<br />para que se borre hasta el recuerdo de ellos.

5 Pues ellos suben a las azoteas<br />y se postran ante el sol, la luna y las estrellas.<br />Dicen seguir al Señor<br />,<br />pero al mismo tiempo rinden culto a Moloc.

6 Destruiré a los que antes me adoraban<br />pero ahora dejaron de hacerlo.<br />Ya no piden el consejo del Señor<br />,<br />ni buscan mis bendiciones».

7 Guarden silencio en presencia del Señor<br /> Soberano,<br />porque se acerca el imponente día del juicio del Señor<br />.<br />El Señor<br /> ha preparado a su pueblo para una gran matanza<br />y ha seleccionado a sus verdugos.

8 «En ese día del juicio<br />—dice el Señor<br />—<br />castigaré a los líderes y a los príncipes de Judá<br />y a todos los que siguen costumbres paganas.

9 Sí, castigaré a los que toman parte en cultos paganos<br />y a los que llenan las casas de sus amos con violencia y engaño.

10 »En ese día —dice el Señor<br />—<br />vendrá un grito de alarma desde la puerta del Pescado<br />y el eco resonará por todo el Barrio Nuevo<br /> de la ciudad.<br />Un gran estrépito se oirá desde las colinas.

11 Giman de dolor los que viven en la zona del mercado,<br />porque todos los comerciantes y negociantes serán destruidos.

12 »Buscaré con linternas en los rincones más oscuros de Jerusalén<br />para castigar a quienes descansen cómodos con sus pecados.<br />Piensan que el Señor<br /> no les hará nada;<br />ni bueno ni malo.

13 Por eso serán despojados de sus posesiones y<br />sus casas serán saqueadas.<br />Construirán nuevas casas<br />pero nunca vivirán en ellas.<br />Plantarán viñedos<br />pero nunca beberán su vino.

14 »Ese terrible día del Señor<br /> está cerca.<br />Viene de prisa,<br />un día de llanto amargo,<br />un día cuando aun los hombres fuertes clamarán.

15 Será un día cuando el Señor<br /> derramará su ira,<br />un día de terrible aflicción y angustia,<br />un día de ruina y desolación,<br />un día de oscuridad y penumbra,<br />un día de nubes y de negrura,

16 un día de sonido de trompeta y gritos de batalla.<br />¡Caen las ciudades amuralladas<br />y las más sólidas fortificaciones!

17 »Por haber pecado contra el Señor<br />,<br />los haré andar a tientas como el ciego.<br />Su sangre será vertida en el polvo<br />y sus cuerpos quedarán pudriéndose sobre la tierra».

18 Ni su plata ni su oro los salvará<br />en el día de la ira del Señor<br />.<br />Pues toda la tierra será devorada<br />por el fuego de su celo.<br />Él dará un final aterrador<br />a toda la gente de la tierra.

1 The word of the LORD that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, during the reign of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah:

2 “I will sweep away everything from the face of the earth,” declares the LORD.

3 “I will sweep away both man and beast; I will sweep away the birds in the sky and the fish in the sea— and the idols that cause the wicked to stumble.”“When I destroy all mankind on the face of the earth,” declares the LORD,

4 “I will stretch out my hand against Judah and against all who live in Jerusalem. I will destroy every remnant of Baal worship in this place, the very names of the idolatrous priests—

5 those who bow down on the roofs to worship the starry host, those who bow down and swear by the LORDand who also swear by Molek,

6 those who turn back from following the LORDand neither seek the LORD nor inquire of him.”

7 Be silent before the Sovereign LORD, for the day of the LORD is near. The LORD has prepared a sacrifice; he has consecrated those he has invited.

8 “On the day of the LORD’s sacrifice I will punish the officials and the king’s sons and all those clad in foreign clothes.

9 On that day I will punish all who avoid stepping on the threshold,who fill the temple of their gods with violence and deceit.

10 “On that day,” declares the LORD, “a cry will go up from the Fish Gate, wailing from the New Quarter, and a loud crash from the hills.

11 Wail, you who live in the market district ; all your merchants will be wiped out, all who trade with silver will be destroyed.

12 At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those who are complacent, who are like wine left on its dregs, who think, ‘The LORD will do nothing, either good or bad.’

13 Their wealth will be plundered, their houses demolished. Though they build houses, they will not live in them; though they plant vineyards, they will not drink the wine.”

14 The great day of the LORD is near— near and coming quickly. The cry on the day of the LORD is bitter; the Mighty Warrior shouts his battle cry.

15 That day will be a day of wrath— a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness—

16 a day of trumpet and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the corner towers.

17 “I will bring such distress on all people that they will grope about like those who are blind, because they have sinned against the LORD. Their blood will be poured out like dust and their entrails like dung.

18 Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the LORD’s wrath.” In the fire of his jealousy the whole earth will be consumed, for he will make a sudden end of all who live on the earth.
