2 También nos acompañó Aristarco, un macedonio de Tesalónica. Salimos en un barco matriculado en el puerto de Adramitio, situado en la costa noroccidental de la provincia de Asia.<br /> El barco tenía previsto hacer varias paradas en distintos puertos a lo largo de la costa de la provincia.

3 Al día siguiente, cuando atracamos en Sidón, Julio fue muy amable con Pablo y le permitió desembarcar para visitar a sus amigos, a fin de que ellos pudieran proveer sus necesidades.

4 Desde allí nos hicimos a la mar y nos topamos con fuertes vientos de frente que hacían difícil mantener el barco en curso, así que navegamos hacia el norte de Chipre, entre la isla y el continente.

5 Navegando en mar abierto, pasamos por la costa de Cilicia y Panfilia, y desembarcamos en Mira, en la provincia de Licia.

6 Allí, el oficial al mando encontró un barco egipcio, de Alejandría, con destino a Italia, y nos hizo subir a bordo.

7 Tuvimos que navegar despacio por varios días y, después de serias dificultades, por fin nos acercamos a Gnido; pero teníamos viento en contra, así que cruzamos a la isla de Creta, navegando al resguardo de la costa de la isla con menos viento, frente al cabo de Salmón.

8 Seguimos por la costa con mucha dificultad y finalmente llegamos a Buenos Puertos, cerca de la ciudad de Lasea.

9 Habíamos perdido bastante tiempo. El clima se ponía cada vez más peligroso para viajar por mar, porque el otoño estaba muy avanzado,<br /> y Pablo comentó eso con los oficiales del barco.

10 Les dijo: «Señores, creo que tendremos problemas más adelante si seguimos avanzando: naufragio, pérdida de la carga y también riesgo para nuestras vidas»;

11 pero el oficial a cargo de los prisioneros les hizo más caso al capitán y al dueño del barco que a Pablo.

12 Ya que Buenos Puertos era un puerto desprotegido —un mal lugar para pasar el invierno—, la mayoría de la tripulación quería seguir hasta Fenice, que se encuentra más adelante en la costa de Creta, y pasar el invierno allí. Fenice era un buen puerto, con orientación solo al suroccidente y al noroccidente.

13 Tormenta en el mar<br />Cuando un viento suave comenzó a soplar desde el sur, los marineros pensaron que podrían llegar a salvo. Entonces levaron anclas y navegaron cerca de la costa de Creta;

14 pero el clima cambió abruptamente, y un viento huracanado (llamado «Nororiente») sopló sobre la isla y nos empujó a mar abierto.

15 Los marineros no pudieron girar el barco para hacerle frente al viento, así que se dieron por vencidos y se dejaron llevar por la tormenta.

16 Navegamos al resguardo del lado con menos viento de una pequeña isla llamada Cauda,<br /> donde con gran dificultad subimos a bordo el bote salvavidas que era remolcado por el barco.

17 Después los marineros ataron cuerdas alrededor del casco del barco para reforzarlo. Tenían miedo de que el barco fuera llevado a los bancos de arena de Sirte, frente a la costa africana, así que bajaron el ancla flotante para disminuir la velocidad del barco y se dejaron llevar por el viento.

18 El próximo día, como la fuerza del vendaval seguía azotando el barco, la tripulación comenzó a echar la carga por la borda.

19 Luego, al día siguiente, hasta arrojaron al agua parte del equipo del barco.

20 La gran tempestad rugió durante muchos días, ocultó el sol y las estrellas, hasta que al final se perdió toda esperanza.

21 Nadie había comido en mucho tiempo. Finalmente, Pablo reunió a la tripulación y le dijo: «Señores, ustedes debieran haberme escuchado al principio y no haber salido de Creta. Así se hubieran evitado todos estos daños y pérdidas.

22 ¡Pero anímense! Ninguno de ustedes perderá la vida, aunque el barco se hundirá.

23 Pues anoche un ángel del Dios a quien pertenezco y a quien sirvo estuvo a mi lado

24 y dijo: “¡Pablo, no temas, porque ciertamente serás juzgado ante el César! Además, Dios, en su bondad, ha concedido protección a todos los que navegan contigo”.

25 Así que, ¡anímense! Pues yo le creo a Dios. Sucederá tal como él lo dijo,

26 pero seremos náufragos en una isla».

27 El naufragio<br />Como a la medianoche de la decimocuarta noche de la tormenta, mientras los vientos nos empujaban por el mar Adriático,<br /> los marineros presintieron que había tierra cerca.

28 Arrojaron una cuerda con una pesa y descubrieron que el agua tenía treinta y siete metros de profundidad. Un poco después, volvieron a medir y vieron que solo había veintisiete metros de profundidad.

29 A la velocidad que íbamos, ellos tenían miedo de que pronto fuéramos arrojados contra las rocas que estaban a lo largo de la costa; así que echaron cuatro anclas desde la parte trasera del barco y rezaron que amaneciera.

30 Luego los marineros trataron de abandonar el barco; bajaron el bote salvavidas como si estuvieran echando anclas desde la parte delantera del barco.

31 Así que Pablo les dijo al oficial al mando y a los soldados: «Todos ustedes morirán a menos que los marineros se queden a bordo».

32 Entonces los soldados cortaron las cuerdas del bote salvavidas y lo dejaron a la deriva.

33 Cuando empezó a amanecer, Pablo animó a todos a que comieran. «Ustedes han estado tan preocupados que no han comido nada en dos semanas —les dijo—.

34 Por favor, por su propio bien, coman algo ahora. Pues no perderán ni un solo cabello de la cabeza».

35 Así que tomó un poco de pan, dio gracias a Dios delante de todos, partió un pedazo y se lo comió.

36 Entonces todos se animaron y empezaron a comer,

37 los doscientos setenta y seis que estábamos a bordo.

38 Después de comer, la tripulación redujo aún más el peso del barco echando al mar la carga de trigo.

39 Cuando amaneció, no reconocieron la costa, pero vieron una bahía con una playa y se preguntaban si podrían llegar a la costa haciendo encallar el barco.

40 Entonces cortaron las anclas y las dejaron en el mar. Luego soltaron los timones, izaron las velas de proa y se dirigieron a la costa;

41 pero chocaron contra un banco de arena y el barco encalló demasiado rápido. La proa del barco se clavó en la arena, mientras que la popa fue golpeada repetidas veces por la fuerza de las olas y comenzó a hacerse pedazos.

42 Los soldados querían matar a los prisioneros para asegurarse de que no nadaran hasta la costa y escaparan;

43 pero el oficial al mando quería salvar a Pablo, así que no los dejó llevar a cabo su plan. Luego les ordenó a todos los que sabían nadar que saltaran por la borda primero y se dirigieran a tierra firme.

44 Los demás se sujetaron a tablas o a restos del barco destruido.<br /> Así que todos escaparon a salvo hasta la costa.

1 When it was decided that we would sail for Italy, Paul and some other prisoners were handed over to a centurion named Julius, who belonged to the Imperial Regiment.

2 We boarded a ship from Adramyttium about to sail for ports along the coast of the province of Asia, and we put out to sea. Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, was with us.

3 The next day we landed at Sidon; and Julius, in kindness to Paul, allowed him to go to his friends so they might provide for his needs.

4 From there we put out to sea again and passed to the lee of Cyprus because the winds were against us.

5 When we had sailed across the open sea off the coast of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we landed at Myra in Lycia.

6 There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship sailing for Italy and put us on board.

7 We made slow headway for many days and had difficulty arriving off Cnidus. When the wind did not allow us to hold our course, we sailed to the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone.

8 We moved along the coast with difficulty and came to a place called Fair Havens, near the town of Lasea.

9 Much time had been lost, and sailing had already become dangerous because by now it was after the Day of Atonement. So Paul warned them,

10 “Men, I can see that our voyage is going to be disastrous and bring great loss to ship and cargo, and to our own lives also.”

11 But the centurion, instead of listening to what Paul said, followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship.

12 Since the harbor was unsuitable to winter in, the majority decided that we should sail on, hoping to reach Phoenix and winter there. This was a harbor in Crete, facing both southwest and northwest.

13 When a gentle south wind began to blow, they saw their opportunity; so they weighed anchor and sailed along the shore of Crete.

14 Before very long, a wind of hurricane force, called the Northeaster, swept down from the island.

15 The ship was caught by the storm and could not head into the wind; so we gave way to it and were driven along.

16 As we passed to the lee of a small island called Cauda, we were hardly able to make the lifeboat secure,

17 so the men hoisted it aboard. Then they passed ropes under the ship itself to hold it together. Because they were afraid they would run aground on the sandbars of Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor and let the ship be driven along.

18 We took such a violent battering from the storm that the next day they began to throw the cargo overboard.

19 On the third day, they threw the ship’s tackle overboard with their own hands.

20 When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved.

21 After they had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said: “Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss.

22 But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed.

23 Last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me

24 and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.’

25 So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me.

26 Nevertheless, we must run aground on some island.”

27 On the fourteenth night we were still being driven across the Adriatic Sea, when about midnight the sailors sensed they were approaching land.

28 They took soundings and found that the water was a hundred and twenty feet deep. A short time later they took soundings again and found it was ninety feet deep.

29 Fearing that we would be dashed against the rocks, they dropped four anchors from the stern and prayed for daylight.

30 In an attempt to escape from the ship, the sailors let the lifeboat down into the sea, pretending they were going to lower some anchors from the bow.

31 Then Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, “Unless these men stay with the ship, you cannot be saved.”

32 So the soldiers cut the ropes that held the lifeboat and let it drift away.

33 Just before dawn Paul urged them all to eat. “For the last fourteen days,” he said, “you have been in constant suspense and have gone without food—you haven’t eaten anything.

34 Now I urge you to take some food. You need it to survive. Not one of you will lose a single hair from his head.”

35 After he said this, he took some bread and gave thanks to God in front of them all. Then he broke it and began to eat.

36 They were all encouraged and ate some food themselves.

37 Altogether there were 276 of us on board.

38 When they had eaten as much as they wanted, they lightened the ship by throwing the grain into the sea.

39 When daylight came, they did not recognize the land, but they saw a bay with a sandy beach, where they decided to run the ship aground if they could.

40 Cutting loose the anchors, they left them in the sea and at the same time untied the ropes that held the rudders. Then they hoisted the foresail to the wind and made for the beach.

41 But the ship struck a sandbar and ran aground. The bow stuck fast and would not move, and the stern was broken to pieces by the pounding of the surf.

42 The soldiers planned to kill the prisoners to prevent any of them from swimming away and escaping.

43 But the centurion wanted to spare Paul’s life and kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land.

44 The rest were to get there on planks or on other pieces of the ship. In this way everyone reached land safely.
