NLT 13 As soon as Jesus heard the news, he left in a boat to a remote area to be alone. But the crowds heard where he was headed and followed on foot from many towns. NIV 13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. NLT 14 Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. NIV 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. NLT 15 That evening the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” NIV 15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” NLT 16 But Jesus said, “That isn’t necessary—you feed them.” NIV 16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” NLT 17 “But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish!” they answered. NIV 17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. NLT 18 “Bring them here,” he said. NIV 18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. NLT 19 Then he told the people to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he gave the bread to the disciples, who distributed it to the people. NIV 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. NLT 20 They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers. NIV 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
