Matthew 1:18-25

CEB 18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ took place. When Mary his mother was engaged to Joseph, before they were married, she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit. NRS 18 Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. CEB 19 Joseph her husband was a righteous man. Because he didn't want to humiliate her, he decided to call off their engagement quietly. NRS 19 Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. CEB 20 As he was thinking about this, an angel from the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the child she carries was conceived by the Holy Spirit. NRS 20 But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. CEB 21 She will give birth to a son, and you will call him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." NRS 21 She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." CEB 22 Now all of this took place so that what the Lord had spoken through the prophet would be fulfilled: NRS 22 All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: CEB 23 Look! A virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, And they will call him, Emmanuel. (Emmanuel means "God with us.") NRS 23 "Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means, "God is with us." CEB 24 When Joseph woke up, he did just as an angel from God commanded and took Mary as his wife. NRS 24 When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, CEB 25 But he didn't have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to a son. Joseph called him Jesus. NRS 25 but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.
