Jeremías 42:4-14

4 —Está bien —contestó Jeremías—, oraré al Señor
su Dios, como me lo han pedido, y les diré todo lo que él diga. No les ocultaré nada.

5 Ellos dijeron a Jeremías:
—¡Que el Señor
tu Dios sea fiel testigo contra nosotros si rehusamos obedecer todo lo que él nos diga que hagamos!

6 Nos guste o no, obedeceremos al Señor
nuestro Dios a quien te enviamos con nuestro ruego. Pues si le obedecemos, todo nos irá bien.

7 Diez días más tarde, el Señor
le dio a Jeremías la respuesta.

8 Así que él mandó a buscar a Johanán, hijo de Carea, a los demás líderes guerrilleros y a todo el pueblo, desde el menos importante hasta el más importante.

9 Les dijo: «Ustedes me enviaron al Señor
, Dios de Israel, con su petición y esta es la respuesta:

10 “Permanezcan aquí en esta tierra. Si lo hacen, los edificaré y no los derribaré; los plantaré y no los desarraigaré. Pues lamento todo el castigo que tuve que traer sobre ustedes.

11 No teman más al rey de Babilonia —dice el Señor
—. Pues yo estoy con ustedes, los salvaré y los libraré de su poder.

12 Seré misericordioso con ustedes al hacer que él sea amable para que les permita quedarse en su propia tierra”.

13 »Sin embargo, si se niegan a obedecer al Señor
su Dios, y dicen: “No nos quedaremos aquí;

14 sino que iremos a Egipto donde estaremos libres de guerra, de llamados a las armas y de hambre”,

Jeremías 42:4-14 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH CAHPTER 42

This chapter contains a request of the Jews to Jeremiah, to pray to the Lord for them to direct them, and the Lord's answer to it. The request is made by the captains and all the people, Jer 42:1-3; which Jeremiah undertook to present to the Lord, Jer 42:4; they promising to go according to the direction that should be given, Jer 42:5,6. After ten days an answer is returned, and the prophet calls the captains and people together to hear it, Jer 42:7,8; the purport of which was, that if they continued in the land of Judah, it would be well with them, and they would be safe, Jer 42:9-12; but if they went into Egypt, they should die by the sword, famine, and pestilence, and be a curse and reproach, and never see their own land more, Jer 42:13-18; they are charged with dissimulation and disobedience, Jer 42:19-21; and the chapter is concluded with an assurance of their perishing by the above judgments in the place they were desirous of dwelling in, Jer 42:22.
