Thosepassing by were hurlingabuse at Him, 7wagging their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who are going to 8destroy the temple and rebuild it in threedays,

In the sameway the chiefpriestsalso, along with the scribes, were mocking Him amongthemselves and saying, "9He savedothers; He cannot*saveHimself.

"Let this Christ, 10the King of Israel, nowcomedown from the cross, so that we may see and believe!" 11Those who were crucified with Him were alsoinsulting Him.

12When the 13sixthhourcame, darknessfellover the wholelanduntil the 14ninthhour.

At the 15ninthhourJesuscried out with a loudvoice, "16ELOI, ELOI, LAMASABACHTHANI?"which is translated, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY* HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"

When some of the bystandersheard it, they began saying, "Behold, He is calling for Elijah."

Someoneran and filled a sponge with sourwine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, "Let us seewhetherElijah will come to take Him down."

17And Jesusuttered a loudcry, and breathed His last.

18And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

19When the centurion, who was standingright in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, "Trulythisman was the Son of God!"

20There were also some womenlooking on from a distance, amongwhom were MaryMagdalene, and Mary the mother of James21the Less and Joses, and 22Salome.

When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and 23minister to Him; and there were manyotherwomen who came up with Him to Jerusalem.
Jesus Is Buried
4224When evening had alreadycome, because it was 25the preparationday, that is, the daybefore the Sabbath,

Joseph of Arimatheacame, a 26prominentmember of the Council, whohimself was 27waiting for the kingdom of God; and he 28gathered up courage and went in beforePilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.

Pilatewonderedif He was dead by thistime, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was alreadydead.

And ascertaining this from 29the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

Joseph bought a linencloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linencloth and laid Him in a tombwhich had beenhewn out in the rock; and he rolled a stoneagainst the entrance of the tomb.

30MaryMagdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He was laid.
