And he went out from thence,andcameinto his owncountry;andhisdisciplesfollowhim.

And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teachin the synagogue:andmanyhearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things?andwhatwisdom is this which is given unto him,thatevensuch mighty works are wroughtbyhishands?

Isnotthis the carpenter, the son of Mary*, the brother of James,andJoses,and of Juda,andSimon?andarenothissistersherewithus?And they were offended[a]athim.

ButJesussaid unto them*, A prophetisnot without honour,butin his owncountry,andamong his own kin,andin his ownhouse.

And he could*theredono mighty work,save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.

And he marvelledbecause of theirunbelief.And he went round about the villages,teaching.

And he called unto him the twelve,andbegan to sendthemforth by two and two;andgavethem power overuncleanspirits;

Andcommandedthemthat they should takenothingfor their journey,save a staffonly;noscrip,nobread,nomoney[b]in their purse:

And he said unto them,In what place soeveryeenterinto an house,thereabidetillyedepart from that place.

Andwhosoever*shallnotreceiveyou,norhearyou, when ye departthence, shake off the dustunderyourfeetfor a testimony against them.Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodomand[c]Gomorrhain the day of judgment,than for thatcity.

And they went out, and preachedthat men should repent.

And they cast outmanydevils,andanointed with oilmany that were sick,andhealed them.

AndkingHerodheard of him; (for hisnamewas spread abroad:) and he said, ThatJohn the Baptist was risenfrom the dead,andthereforemightyworks do shew forth themselvesinhim.

Otherssaid, That it isElias.Andotherssaid, That it is a prophet,oras one of the prophets.

But when Herodheard thereof, he said, ItisJohn,whom*Ibeheaded: he is risenfrom the dead.

ForHerodhimself had sent forth and laid hold upon John,andboundhiminprisonforHerodias'sake,hisbrotherPhilip'swife:for he had marriedher.

ForJohn had said unto Herod*, It isnotlawful for thee to havethybrother'swife.

ThereforeHerodias had a quarrel[d] against him,andwould have killedhim;but she couldnot:

ForHerodfearedJohn,knowing that he was a justmanand an holy,andobservedhim;[e]and when he heardhim, he did many things,andheardhimgladly.

And when a convenientday was come, thatHerod on hisbirthdaymade a supper to hislords*, high captains,andchief estates of Galilee;

And when the daughter of the saidHerodias came in, anddanced, andpleasedHerodand them that sat with him, the kingsaid unto the damsel,Ask of mewhatsoeverthouwilt, and I will give it thee.

And he sware unto her,Whatsoever*thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee,unto the half of mykingdom.

And she went forth, and said unto hermother,What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.
25
And she came instraightwaywithhasteunto the king, and asked, saying, I willthat thou giveme by and byin a charger the head of John the Baptist.
26
And the kingwas exceeding sorry; yet for his oath's sake,and for their sakes which sat with him, he wouldnotrejecther.
27
Andimmediately the kingsent an executioner, and commanded[f]hishead to be brought: and he went and beheadedhimin the prison,
28
Andbroughthisheadin a charger,andgaveit to the damsel:and the damselgaveit to hermother.
29
And when hisdisciplesheard of it, they cameand took uphiscorpse,andlaiditin a tomb.
