Matthew 3

1 At that time John the Baptist came to the desert of Judea and started preaching.
2 "Turn away from your sins," he said, "because the Kingdom of heaven is near!"
3 John was the man the prophet Isaiah was talking about when he said, "Someone is shouting in the desert, "Prepare a road for the Lord; make a straight path for him to travel!' "
4 John's clothes were made of camel's hair; he wore a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
5 People came to him from Jerusalem, from the whole province of Judea, and from all over the country near the Jordan River.
6 They confessed their sins, and he baptized them in the Jordan.
7 When John saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to him to be baptized, he said to them, "You snakes - who told you that you could escape from the punishment God is about to send?
8 Do those things that will show that you have turned from your sins.
9 And don't think you can escape punishment by saying that Abraham is your ancestor. I tell you that God can take these rocks and make descendants for Abraham!
10 The ax is ready to cut down the trees at the roots; every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown in the fire.
11 I baptize you with water to show that you have repented, but the one who will come after me will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. He is much greater than I am; and I am not good enough even to carry his sandals.
12 He has his winnowing shovel with him to thresh out all the grain. He will gather his wheat into his barn, but he will burn the chaff in a fire that never goes out."
13 At that time Jesus arrived from Galilee and came to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.
14 But John tried to make him change his mind. "I ought to be baptized by you," John said, "and yet you have come to me!"
15 But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so for now. For in this way we shall do all that God requires." So John agreed.
16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came up out of the water. Then heaven was opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and lighting on him.
17 Then a voice said from heaven, "This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased."

Mark 1

1 This is the Good News about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
2 It began as the prophet Isaiah had written: "God said, "I will send my messenger ahead of you to open the way for you.'
3 Someone is shouting in the desert, "Get the road ready for the Lord; make a straight path for him to travel!' "
4 So John appeared in the desert, baptizing and preaching. "Turn away from your sins and be baptized," he told the people, "and God will forgive your sins."
5 Many people from the province of Judea and the city of Jerusalem went out to hear John. They confessed their sins, and he baptized them in the Jordan River.
6 John wore clothes made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
7 He announced to the people, "The man who will come after me is much greater than I am. I am not good enough even to bend down and untie his sandals.
8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
9 Not long afterward Jesus came from Nazareth in the province of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
10 As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, he saw heaven opening and the Spirit coming down on him like a dove.
11 And a voice came from heaven, "You are my own dear Son. I am pleased with you."
12 At once the Spirit made him go into the desert,
13 where he stayed forty days, being tempted by Satan. Wild animals were there also, but angels came and helped him.
14 After John had been put in prison, Jesus went to Galilee and preached the Good News from God.
15 "The right time has come," he said, "and the Kingdom of God is near! Turn away from your sins and believe the Good News!"
16 As Jesus walked along the shore of Lake Galilee, he saw two fishermen, Simon and his brother Andrew, catching fish with a net.
17 Jesus said to them, "Come with me, and I will teach you to catch people."
18 At once they left their nets and went with him.
19 He went a little farther on and saw two other brothers, James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in their boat getting their nets ready.
20 As soon as Jesus saw them, he called them; they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and went with Jesus.
21 Jesus and his disciples came to the town of Capernaum, and on the next Sabbath Jesus went to the synagogue and began to teach.
22 The people who heard him were amazed at the way he taught, for he wasn't like the teachers of the Law; instead, he taught with authority.
23 Just then a man with an evil spirit came into the synagogue and screamed,
24 "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Are you here to destroy us? I know who you are - you are God's holy messenger!"
25 Jesus ordered the spirit, "Be quiet, and come out of the man!"
26 The evil spirit shook the man hard, gave a loud scream, and came out of him.
27 The people were all so amazed that they started saying to one another, "What is this? Is it some kind of new teaching? This man has authority to give orders to the evil spirits, and they obey him!"
28 And so the news about Jesus spread quickly everywhere in the province of Galilee.
29 Jesus and his disciples, including James and John, left the synagogue and went straight to the home of Simon and Andrew.
30 Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever, and as soon as Jesus arrived, he was told about her.
31 He went to her, took her by the hand, and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began to wait on them.
32 After the sun had set and evening had come, people brought to Jesus all the sick and those who had demons.
33 All the people of the town gathered in front of the house.
34 Jesus healed many who were sick with all kinds of diseases and drove out many demons. He would not let the demons say anything, because they knew who he was.
35 Very early the next morning, long before daylight, Jesus got up and left the house. He went out of town to a lonely place, where he prayed.
36 But Simon and his companions went out searching for him,
37 and when they found him, they said, "Everyone is looking for you."
38 But Jesus answered, "We must go on to the other villages around here. I have to preach in them also, because that is why I came."
39 So he traveled all over Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and driving out demons.
40 A man suffering from a dreaded skin disease came to Jesus, knelt down, and begged him for help. "If you want to," he said, "you can make me clean."
41 Jesus was filled with pity, and reached out and touched him. "I do want to," he answered. "Be clean!"
42 At once the disease left the man, and he was clean.
43 Then Jesus spoke sternly to him and sent him away at once,
44 after saying to him, "Listen, don't tell anyone about this. But go straight to the priest and let him examine you; then in order to prove to everyone that you are cured, offer the sacrifice that Moses ordered."
45 But the man went away and began to spread the news everywhere. Indeed, he talked so much that Jesus could not go into a town publicly. Instead, he stayed out in lonely places, and people came to him from everywhere.

Luke 3

1 It was the fifteenth year of the rule of Emperor Tiberius; Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip was ruler of the territory of Iturea and Trachonitis; Lysanias was ruler of Abilene,
2 and Annas and Caiaphas were High Priests. At that time the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert.
3 So John went throughout the whole territory of the Jordan River, preaching, "Turn away from your sins and be baptized, and God will forgive your sins."
4 As it is written in the book of the prophet Isaiah: "Someone is shouting in the desert: "Get the road ready for the Lord; make a straight path for him to travel!
5 Every valley must be filled up, every hill and mountain leveled off. The winding roads must be made straight, and the rough paths made smooth.
6 The whole human race will see God's salvation!' "
7 Crowds of people came out to John to be baptized by him. "You snakes!" he said to them. "Who told you that you could escape from the punishment God is about to send?
8 Do those things that will show that you have turned from your sins. And don't start saying among yourselves that Abraham is your ancestor. I tell you that God can take these rocks and make descendants for Abraham!
9 The ax is ready to cut down the trees at the roots; every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown in the fire."
10 The people asked him, "What are we to do, then?"
11 He answered, "Whoever has two shirts must give one to the man who has none, and whoever has food must share it."
12 Some tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, "Teacher, what are we to do?"
13 "Don't collect more than is legal," he told them.
14 Some soldiers also asked him, "What about us? What are we to do?" He said to them, "Don't take money from anyone by force or accuse anyone falsely. Be content with your pay."
15 People's hopes began to rise, and they began to wonder whether John perhaps might be the Messiah.
16 So John said to all of them, "I baptize you with water, but someone is coming who is much greater than I am. I am not good enough even to untie his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
17 He has his winnowing shovel with him, to thresh out all the grain and gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn the chaff in a fire that never goes out."
18 In many different ways John preached the Good News to the people and urged them to change their ways.
19 But John reprimanded Governor Herod, because he had married Herodias, his brother's wife, and had done many other evil things.
20 Then Herod did an even worse thing by putting John in prison.
21 After all the people had been baptized, Jesus also was baptized. While he was praying, heaven was opened,
22 and the Holy Spirit came down upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my own dear Son. I am pleased with you."
23 When Jesus began his work, he was about thirty years old. He was the son, so people thought, of Joseph, who was the son of Heli,
24 the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,
25 the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai,
26 the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda,

28 the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er,
29 the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi,
30 the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim,
31 the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David,
32 the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon,
33 the son of Amminadab, the son of Admin, the son of Arni, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah,
34 the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,

37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Kenan,
38 the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.
