Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him1 and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,

for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.210
Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke3 of the grace that was to come to you,4 searched intently and with the greatest care,511
trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ6 in them was pointing when he predicted7 the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.

It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you,8 when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you9 by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven.10 Even angels long to look into these things.

Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled;11 set your hope12 fully on the grace to be given you13 when Jesus Christ is revealed.1414
As obedient15 children, do not conform16 to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.1715
But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;1816
for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."a1917
Since you call on a Father20 who judges each man's work21 impartially,22 live your lives as strangers23 here in reverent fear.2418
For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed25 from the empty way of life26 handed down to you from your forefathers,
