So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep,1 but let us be alert2 and self-controlled.37
For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.48
But since we belong to the day,5 let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate,6 and the hope of salvation7 as a helmet.89
For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath9 but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.1010
He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.1111
Therefore encourage one another12 and build each other up,13 just as in fact you are doing.
Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard14 among you, who are over you in the Lord15 and who admonish you.
Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.1614
And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle,17 encourage the timid, help the weak,18 be patient with everyone.
Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong,19 but always try to be kind to each other20 and to everyone else.
Be joyful always;21
