333And when they came to a placecalled4Golgotha, whichmeansPlace of a Skull,
34
5they gave Him 6wine to drinkmixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling* to drink.
35
And when they had crucified Him, 7they divided up His garmentsamong themselves by castinglots.
36
And sittingdown, they began to 8keepwatchover Him there.
37
And above His head they put up the chargeagainst Him which read, "9THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS."
38
At that timetworobbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left.
39
And thosepassing by were hurlingabuse at Him, 10wagging their heads
40
and saying, "11You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in threedays, saveYourself! 12If You are the Son of God, comedown from the cross."
41
In the sameway the chiefpriestsalso, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying,
42
"13He savedothers; He cannot*saveHimself. 14He is the King of Israel; let Him nowcomedown from the cross, and we will believe in Him.
43
"15HE TRUSTS IN GOD; LET GODRESCUE Him now, IF HE DELIGHTS IN HIM; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.' "
44
16The robbers who had been crucified with Him were alsoinsulting Him with the same words.
45
17Now from the sixthhourdarknessfell upon all the landuntil the ninthhour.
46
About the ninthhourJesuscried out with a loudvoice, saying, "18ELI, ELI, LAMASABACHTHANI?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"
47
And some of those who were standingthere, when they heard it, began saying, "Thisman is calling for Elijah."
48
19Immediatelyone of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sourwine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink.
49
But the rest of them said, "Let us seewhetherElijah will come to save Him."
50
And Jesus20cried out again with a loudvoice, and yielded up His spirit.
51
21And behold, 22the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and 23the earthshook and the rocks were split.
52
The tombs were opened, and manybodies of the saints who had 24fallenasleep were raised;
53
and coming out of the tombsafter His resurrection they entered25the holycity and appeared to many.
54
26Now the centurion, and those who were with him 27keepingguardoverJesus, when they saw28the earthquake and the things that were happening, became veryfrightened and said, "Trulythis was 29the Son of God!"
55
30Manywomen were therelooking on from a distance, who had followedJesus from Galilee while 31ministering to Him.
56
Among them was 32MaryMagdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and 33the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
