17
For Christ did not send me to baptize,1 but to preach the gospel--not with words of human wisdom,2 lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
18
For the message of the cross is foolishness3 to those who are perishing,4 but to us who are being saved5 it is the power of God.619
For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."a720
Where is the wise man?8 Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age?9 Has not God made foolish10 the wisdom of the world?
21
For since in the wisdom of God the world11 through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save12 those who believe.1322
Jews demand miraculous signs14 and Greeks look for wisdom,
23
but we preach Christ crucified:15 a stumbling block16 to Jews and foolishness17 to Gentiles,
24
but to those whom God has called,18 both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God19 and the wisdom of God.2025
For the foolishness21 of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness22 of God is stronger than man's strength.
