In the second year of King Darius,1 on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai2 to Zerubbabel3 son of Shealtiel, governor4 of Judah, and to Joshuaa5 son of Jehozadak,6 the high priest:72
This is what the LORD Almighty8 says: "These people9 say, 'The time has not yet come for the LORD's house to be built.10' "
Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai:114
"Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses,12 while this house remains a ruin?13"
Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: "Give careful thought14 to your ways.
You have planted much, but have harvested little.15 You eat, but never have enough.16 You drink, but never have your fill.17 You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages,18 only to put them in a purse with holes in it."
This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Give careful thought19 to your ways.
Go up into the mountains and bring down timber20 and build the house, so that I may take pleasure21 in it and be honored,22" says the LORD.
"You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little.23 What you brought home, I blew24 away. Why?" declares the LORD Almighty. "Because of my house, which remains a ruin,25 while each of you is busy with his own house.
Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld26 their dew27 and the earth its crops.2811
I called for a drought29 on the fields and the mountains,30 on the grain, the new wine,31 the oil32 and whatever the ground produces, on men and cattle, and on the labor of your hands.33"
