1 When Israel was a youth I loved him, And 1out of Egypt I 2called My son. 2 The more a3they called them, The more they went from bthem; They kept 4sacrificing to the Baals And 5burning incense to idols. 3 Yet it is I who taught Ephraim to walk, cI 6took them in My arms ; But they did not know that I 7healed them. 4 I 8led them with cords of a man, with bonds of love, And 9I became to them as one who lifts the yoke from their jaws ; And I bent down and 10fed them. 5 dThey will not return to the land of Egypt ; But Assyria -he will be etheir king Because they 11refused to return to Me. 6 The 12sword will whirl against ftheir cities, And will demolish gtheir gate bars And 13consume them because of their 14counsels. 7 So My people are bent on 15turning from Me. Though hthey call ithem to the One on high, None at all exalts Him. 8 16How can I give you up, O Ephraim ? How can I surrender you, O Israel ? How can I jmake you like 17Admah ? How can I treat you like 18Zeboiim ? My heart is turned over within Me, kAll My compassions are kindled. 9 I will 19not execute My fierce anger ; I will not destroy Ephraim 20again.
