An oracle1 concerning the Valley2 of Vision:3 What troubles you now, that you have all gone up on the roofs,42
O town full of commotion, O city of tumult5 and revelry?6 Your slain7 were not killed by the sword,8 nor did they die in battle.
All your leaders have fled9 together; they have been captured10 without using the bow. All you who were caught were taken prisoner together, having fled while the enemy was still far away.
Therefore I said, "Turn away from me; let me weep11 bitterly. Do not try to console me over the destruction of my people."125
The Lord, the LORD Almighty, has a day13 of tumult and trampling14 and terror15 in the Valley of Vision,16 a day of battering down walls17 and of crying out to the mountains.
Elam18 takes up the quiver,19 with her charioteers and horses; Kir20 uncovers the shield.
Your choicest valleys21 are full of chariots, and horsemen are posted at the city gates;228
the defenses of Judah are stripped away. And you looked in that day23 to the weapons24 in the Palace of the Forest;259
you saw that the City of David had many breaches26 in its defenses; you stored up water in the Lower Pool.2710
You counted the buildings in Jerusalem and tore down houses28 to strengthen the wall.2911
You built a reservoir between the two walls30 for the water of the Old Pool,31 but you did not look to the One who made it, or have regard32 for the One who planned33 it long ago.
The Lord, the LORD Almighty, called you on that day34 to weep35 and to wail, to tear out your hair36 and put on sackcloth.3713
But see, there is joy and revelry,38 slaughtering of cattle and killing of sheep, eating of meat and drinking of wine!39 "Let us eat and drink," you say, "for tomorrow we die!"4014
The LORD Almighty has revealed this in my hearing:41 "Till your dying day this sin will not be atoned42 for," says the Lord, the LORD Almighty.
