An oracle1 concerning Damascus:2 "See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins.32
The cities of Aroer4 will be deserted and left to flocks,5 which will lie down,6 with no one to make them afraid.73
The fortified8 city will disappear from Ephraim, and royal power from Damascus; the remnant of Aram will be like the glory9 of the Israelites,"10 declares the LORD Almighty.
"In that day11 the glory12 of Jacob will fade; the fat of his body will waste13 away.
It will be as when a reaper gathers the standing grain and harvests14 the grain with his arm-- as when a man gleans heads of grain15 in the Valley of Rephaim.166
Yet some gleanings will remain,17 as when an olive tree is beaten,18 leaving two or three olives on the topmost branches, four or five on the fruitful boughs," declares the LORD, the God of Israel.
In that day19 men will look20 to their Maker21 and turn their eyes to the Holy One22 of Israel.
They will not look to the altars,23 the work of their hands,24 and they will have no regard for the Asherah polesa25 and the incense altars their fingers26 have made.
In that day their strong cities, which they left because of the Israelites, will be like places abandoned to thickets and undergrowth.27 And all will be desolation.
You have forgotten28 God your Savior;29 you have not remembered the Rock,30 your fortress.31 Therefore, though you set out the finest plants and plant imported vines,3211
though on the day you set them out, you make them grow, and on the morning33 when you plant them, you bring them to bud, yet the harvest34 will be as nothing35 in the day of disease and incurable36 pain.37
