Jeremiah's Complaint

7 O LORD, you deceiveda1 me, and I was deceivedb; you overpowered2 me and prevailed. I am ridiculed3 all day long; everyone mocks4 me. 8 Whenever I speak, I cry out proclaiming violence and destruction.5 So the word of the LORD has brought me insult and reproach6 all day long. 9 But if I say, "I will not mention him or speak any more in his name,"7 his word is in my heart like a fire,8 a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in;9 indeed, I cannot. 10 I hear many whispering, "Terror10 on every side! Report11 him! Let's report him!" All my friends12 are waiting for me to slip,13 saying, "Perhaps he will be deceived; then we will prevail14 over him and take our revenge15 on him." 11 But the LORD 16 is with me like a mighty warrior; so my persecutors17 will stumble and not prevail.18 They will fail and be thoroughly disgraced;19 their dishonor will never be forgotten. 12 O LORD Almighty, you who examine the righteous and probe the heart and mind,20 let me see your vengeance21 upon them, for to you I have committed22 my cause. 13 Sing23 to the LORD! Give praise to the LORD! He rescues24 the life of the needy from the hands of the wicked.25
