Have we not all one Fathera ?1 Did not one God create us?2 Why do we profane the covenant3 of our fathers by breaking faith4 with one another?
Judah has broken faith. A detestable5 thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the LORD loves,6 by marrying7 the daughter of a foreign god.812
As for the man who does this, whoever he may be, may the LORD cut him off9 from the tents of Jacobb10--even though he brings offerings11 to the LORD Almighty.
Another thing you do: You flood the LORD's altar with tears.12 You weep and wail13 because he no longer pays attention14 to your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands.1514
You ask,16 "Why?" It is because the LORD is acting as the witness17 between you and the wife of your youth,18 because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.1915
Has not [the LORD] made them one?20 In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring.c21 So guard yourself22 in your spirit, and do not break faith23 with the wife of your youth.
"I hate divorce,24" says the LORD God of Israel, "and I hate a man's covering himselfd with violence25 as well as with his garment," says the LORD Almighty. So guard yourself in your spirit,26 and do not break faith.
You have wearied27 the LORD with your words. "How have we wearied him?" you ask.28 By saying, "All who do evil are good in the eyes of the LORD, and he is pleased29 with them" or "Where is the God of justice?30"
