They made him jealous1 with their foreign gods and angered2 him with their detestable idols.
They sacrificed3 to demons,4 which are not God-- gods they had not known,5 gods that recently appeared,6 gods your fathers did not fear.
You deserted the Rock, who fathered you; you forgot7 the God who gave you birth.
The LORD saw this and rejected them8 because he was angered by his sons and daughters.920
"I will hide my face10 from them," he said, "and see what their end will be; for they are a perverse generation,11 children who are unfaithful.1221
They made me jealous13 by what is no god and angered me with their worthless idols.14 I will make them envious by those who are not a people; I will make them angry by a nation that has no understanding.1522
For a fire has been kindled by my wrath,16 one that burns to the realm of deatha below.17 It will devour18 the earth and its harvests19 and set afire the foundations of the mountains.2023
"I will heap calamities21 upon them and spend my arrows22 against them.
I will send wasting famine23 against them, consuming pestilence24 and deadly plague;25 I will send against them the fangs of wild beasts,26 the venom of vipers27 that glide in the dust.2825
In the street the sword will make them childless; in their homes terror29 will reign.30 Young men and young women will perish, infants and gray-haired men.3126
I said I would scatter32 them and blot out their memory from mankind,33
