There is one body1 and one Spirit2--just as you were called to one hope when you were called3--
one Lord,4 one faith, one baptism;
one God and Father of all,5 who is over all and through all and in all.67
But to each one of us7 grace8 has been given9 as Christ apportioned it.
This is why ita says: "When he ascended on high, he led captives10 in his train and gave gifts to men."b119
(What does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regionsc ?
He who descended is the very one who ascended12 higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)1311
It was he who gave14 some to be apostles,15 some to be prophets,16 some to be evangelists,17 and some to be pastors and teachers,1812
to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ19 may be built up2013
until we all reach unity21 in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God22 and become mature,23 attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.2414
Then we will no longer be infants,25 tossed back and forth by the waves,26 and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.27
