For an overseer,b12as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not 13be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent 14or greedy for gain,
but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, 15and disciplined.
He must 16hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in 17soundc doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
For there are many who are insubordinate, 18empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of 19the circumcision party.
They must be silenced, since 20they are upsetting whole families by teaching 21for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.
1222One of the Cretans,d a prophet of their own, said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons."e13
This testimony is true. Therefore 23rebuke them 24sharply, that they 25may be sound in the faith,
