So Israel1 set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba,2 he offered sacrifices3 to the God of his father Isaac.42
And God spoke to Israel5 in a vision at night6 and said, "Jacob! Jacob!" "Here I am,"7 he replied.
"I am God, the God of your father,"8 he said. "Do not be afraid9 to go down to Egypt,10 for I will make you into a great nation11 there.124
I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.13 And Joseph's own hand will close your eyes.14"
Then Jacob left Beersheba,15 and Israel's16 sons took their father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts17 that Pharaoh had sent to transport him.
They also took with them their livestock and the possessions18 they had acquired19 in Canaan, and Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt.207
He took with him to Egypt21 his sons and grandsons and his daughters and granddaughters--all his offspring.228
These are the names of the sons of Israel23 (Jacob and his descendants) who went to Egypt: Reuben the firstborn24 of Jacob.
The sons of Reuben:25 Hanoch, Pallu,26 Hezron and Carmi.2710
The sons of Simeon:28 Jemuel,29 Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar30 and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman.
The sons of Levi:31 Gershon,32 Kohath33 and Merari.3412
The sons of Judah:35 Er,36 Onan,37 Shelah, Perez38 and Zerah39 (but Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan).40 The sons of Perez:41 Hezron and Hamul.
The sons of Issachar:42 Tola, Puah,a43 Jashubb44 and Shimron.
The sons of Zebulun:45 Sered, Elon and Jahleel.
These were the sons Leah bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram,c46 besides his daughter Dinah.47 These sons and daughters of his were thirty-three in all.
The sons of Gad:48 Zephon,d49 Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli.
The sons of Asher:50 Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi and Beriah. Their sister was Serah. The sons of Beriah: Heber and Malkiel.
These were the children born to Jacob by Zilpah,51 whom Laban had given to his daughter Leah52--sixteen in all.
The sons of Jacob's wife Rachel:53 Joseph and Benjamin.5420
In Egypt, Manasseh55 and Ephraim56 were born to Joseph57 by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.e5821
The sons of Benjamin:59 Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.6022
These were the sons of Rachel61 who were born to Jacob--fourteen in all.
The son of Dan:62 Hushim.6324
The sons of Naphtali:64 Jahziel, Guni, Jezer and Shillem.
These were the sons born to Jacob by Bilhah,65 whom Laban had given to his daughter Rachel66--seven in all.
All those who went to Egypt with Jacob--those who were his direct descendants, not counting his sons' wives--numbered sixty-six persons.6727
With the two sonsf who had been born to Joseph in Egypt,68 the members of Jacob's family, which went to Egypt, were seventyg in all.6928
Now Jacob sent Judah70 ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen.71 When they arrived in the region of Goshen,
Joseph had his chariot72 made ready and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel.73 As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his fatherh and wept74 for a long time.7530
Israel76 said to Joseph, "Now I am ready to die, since I have seen for myself that you are still alive."7731
Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father's household, "I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, 'My brothers and my father's household, who were living in the land of Canaan,78 have come to me.7932
The men are shepherds;80 they tend livestock,81 and they have brought along their flocks and herds and everything they own.'8233
When Pharaoh calls you in and asks, 'What is your occupation?'8334
you should answer, 'Your servants84 have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.'85 Then you will be allowed to settle86 in the region of Goshen,87 for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.88"
