Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: "Give careful thought1 to your ways.
You have planted much, but have harvested little.2 You eat, but never have enough.3 You drink, but never have your fill.4 You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages,5 only to put them in a purse with holes in it."
This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Give careful thought6 to your ways.
Go up into the mountains and bring down timber7 and build the house, so that I may take pleasure8 in it and be honored,9" says the LORD.
"You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little.10 What you brought home, I blew11 away. Why?" declares the LORD Almighty. "Because of my house, which remains a ruin,12 while each of you is busy with his own house.
Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld13 their dew14 and the earth its crops.1511
I called for a drought16 on the fields and the mountains,17 on the grain, the new wine,18 the oil19 and whatever the ground produces, on men and cattle, and on the labor of your hands.20"
Then Zerubbabel21 son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant22 of the people obeyed23 the voice of the LORD their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared24 the LORD.
Then Haggai,25 the LORD's messenger,26 gave this message of the LORD to the people: "I am with27 you," declares the LORD.
So the LORD stirred up28 the spirit of Zerubbabel29 son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak,30 the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant31 of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the LORD Almighty, their God,
on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month32 in the second year of King Darius.33
