He said to him, "O son of the king, why are you sodepressedmorning after morning? Will you not tell me?" Then Amnonsaid to him, "I am in love with Tamar, the sister of my brotherAbsalom."

Jonadab then said to him, "Liedown on your bed and pretend to be ill; when your fathercomes to see you, say to him, 'Please let my sisterTamarcome and give me some food to eat, and let her prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat from her hand.' "

So Amnonlaydown and pretended to be ill; when the kingcame to see him, Amnonsaid to the king, "Please let my sisterTamarcome and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand."

She took the pan and dished them out before him, but he refused to eat. And Amnonsaid, "Have everyone*go out from me." So everyone*went out from him.

Then Amnonsaid to Tamar, "Bring the food into the bedroom, that I may eat from your hand." So Tamartook the cakeswhich she had made and brought them into the bedroom to her brotherAmnon.

"As for me, where could I getrid of my reproach? And as for you, you will be like one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, pleasespeak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you."

Then Amnonhated her with a verygreathatred; for the hatred with which he hated her was greaterthan the love with which he had loved her. And Amnonsaid to her, "Get up, go away!"

Now she had on a long-sleevedgarment; for in thismanner the virgindaughters of the kingdressed themselves in robes. Then his attendanttook her out and locked the doorbehind her.

Tamarputashes on her head and tore her long-sleevedgarmentwhich was on her; and she put her hand on her head and went away, cryingaloud as she went.

Then Absalom her brothersaid to her, "Has Amnon your brotherbeen with you? But nowkeepsilent, my sister, he is your brother; do not takethismatter to heart." So Tamarremained and was desolate in her brotherAbsalom'shouse.

But the kingsaid to Absalom, "No, my son, we should not allgo, for we will be burdensome to you." Although he urged him, he would not go, but blessed him.

Absalomcommanded his servants, saying, "Seenow, when Amnon'sheart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, 'StrikeAmnon,' then put him to death. Do not fear; have not I myselfcommanded you? Be courageous and be valiant*."

Now it was while they were on the way that the reportcame to David, saying, "Absalom has struckdownall the king'ssons, and not one of them is left."

Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David'sbrother, responded*, "Do not let my lordsuppose they have put to deathall the youngmen, the king'ssons, for Amnonalone is dead; because by the intent of Absalom this has beendeterminedsince the day that he violated his sisterTamar.

Now Absalom had fled. And the youngman who was the watchmanraised his eyes and looked, and behold, manypeople were coming from the roadbehind him by the side of the mountain.

As soon as he had finishedspeaking, behold, the king'ssonscame and lifted their voices and wept; and also the king and all his servantsweptverybitterly*.
