The fortified1 city will disappear from Ephraim, and royal power from Damascus; the remnant of Aram will be like the glory2 of the Israelites,"3 declares the LORD Almighty.
"In that day4 the glory5 of Jacob will fade; the fat of his body will waste6 away.
It will be as when a reaper gathers the standing grain and harvests7 the grain with his arm-- as when a man gleans heads of grain8 in the Valley of Rephaim.96
Yet some gleanings will remain,10 as when an olive tree is beaten,11 leaving two or three olives on the topmost branches, four or five on the fruitful boughs," declares the LORD, the God of Israel.
In that day12 men will look13 to their Maker14 and turn their eyes to the Holy One15 of Israel.
They will not look to the altars,16 the work of their hands,17 and they will have no regard for the Asherah polesa18 and the incense altars their fingers19 have made.
In that day their strong cities, which they left because of the Israelites, will be like places abandoned to thickets and undergrowth.20 And all will be desolation.
You have forgotten21 God your Savior;22 you have not remembered the Rock,23 your fortress.24 Therefore, though you set out the finest plants and plant imported vines,2511
though on the day you set them out, you make them grow, and on the morning26 when you plant them, you bring them to bud, yet the harvest27 will be as nothing28 in the day of disease and incurable29 pain.3012
Oh, the raging31 of many nations-- they rage like the raging sea!32 Oh, the uproar33 of the peoples-- they roar like the roaring of great waters!3413
Although the peoples roar35 like the roar of surging waters, when he rebukes36 them they flee37 far away, driven before the wind like chaff38 on the hills, like tumbleweed before a gale.39
