An oracle1 concerning Egypt:23 See, the LORD rides on a swift cloud4 and is coming to Egypt. The idols of Egypt tremble before him, and the hearts of the Egyptians melt5 within them.
"I will stir up Egyptian against Egyptian-- brother will fight against brother,6 neighbor against neighbor, city against city, kingdom against kingdom.73
The Egyptians will lose heart,8 and I will bring their plans9 to nothing;10 they will consult the idols and the spirits of the dead, the mediums and the spiritists.114
I will hand the Egyptians over to the power of a cruel master, and a fierce king12 will rule over them," declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.
The waters of the river will dry up,13 and the riverbed will be parched and dry.146
The canals will stink;15 the streams of Egypt will dwindle and dry up.16 The reeds17 and rushes will wither,187
also the plants19 along the Nile, at the mouth of the river. Every sown field20 along the Nile will become parched, will blow away and be no more.218
The fishermen22 will groan and lament, all who cast hooks23 into the Nile; those who throw nets on the water will pine away.
Those who work with combed flax24 will despair, the weavers of fine linen25 will lose hope.
The workers in cloth will be dejected, and all the wage earners will be sick at heart.
The officials of Zoan26 are nothing but fools; the wise counselors27 of Pharaoh give senseless advice.28 How can you say to Pharaoh, "I am one of the wise men,29 a disciple of the ancient kings"?
