A Prophecy About Egypt

1 An oracle1 concerning Egypt:23 See, the LORD rides on a swift cloud4 and is coming to Egypt. The idols of Egypt tremble before him, and the hearts of the Egyptians melt5 within them. 2 "I will stir up Egyptian against Egyptian-- brother will fight against brother,6 neighbor against neighbor, city against city, kingdom against kingdom.7 3 The Egyptians will lose heart,8 and I will bring their plans9 to nothing;10 they will consult the idols and the spirits of the dead, the mediums and the spiritists.11 4 I will hand the Egyptians over to the power of a cruel master, and a fierce king12 will rule over them," declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty. 5 The waters of the river will dry up,13 and the riverbed will be parched and dry.14 6 The canals will stink;15 the streams of Egypt will dwindle and dry up.16 The reeds17 and rushes will wither,18 7 also the plants19 along the Nile, at the mouth of the river. Every sown field20 along the Nile will become parched, will blow away and be no more.21 8 The fishermen22 will groan and lament, all who cast hooks23 into the Nile; those who throw nets on the water will pine away. 9 Those who work with combed flax24 will despair, the weavers of fine linen25 will lose hope.
