You boast, "We have entered into a covenant with death,1 with the gravea we have made an agreement. When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by,2 it cannot touch us, for we have made a lie3 our refuge and falsehoodb our hiding place.4"
So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion,5 a tested stone,6 a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation;7 the one who trusts will never be dismayed.817
I will make justice9 the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line;10 hail11 will sweep away your refuge, the lie, and water will overflow12 your hiding place.
Your covenant with death will be annulled; your agreement with the grave will not stand.13 When the overwhelming scourge sweeps by,14 you will be beaten down15 by it.
As often as it comes it will carry you away;16 morning after morning,17 by day and by night, it will sweep through." The understanding of this message will bring sheer terror.1820
The bed is too short to stretch out on, the blanket too narrow to wrap around you.1921
The LORD will rise up as he did at Mount Perazim,20 he will rouse himself as in the Valley of Gibeon21-- to do his work,22 his strange work, and perform his task, his alien task.
Now stop your mocking,23 or your chains will become heavier; the Lord, the LORD Almighty, has told me of the destruction decreed24 against the whole land.2523
Listen26 and hear my voice; pay attention and hear what I say.
When a farmer plows for planting,27 does he plow continually? Does he keep on breaking up and harrowing the soil?
When he has leveled the surface, does he not sow caraway and scatter cummin?28 Does he not plant wheat in its place,c barley29 in its plot,d and spelt30 in its field?
