The Day of the LORD

6 You have abandoned1 your people, the house of Jacob.2 They are full of superstitions from the East; they practice divination3 like the Philistines4 and clasp hands5 with pagans.6 7 Their land is full of silver and gold;7 there is no end to their treasures.8 Their land is full of horses;9 there is no end to their chariots.10 8 Their land is full of idols;11 they bow down12 to the work of their hands,13 to what their fingers14 have made. 9 So man will be brought low15 and mankind humbled16-- do not forgive them.a17 10 Go into the rocks, hide18 in the ground from dread of the LORD and the splendor of his majesty!19 11 The eyes of the arrogant20 man will be humbled21 and the pride22 of men brought low;23 the LORD alone will be exalted24 in that day.25 12 The LORD Almighty has a day26 in store for all the proud27 and lofty,28 for all that is exalted29 (and they will be humbled),30 13 for all the cedars of Lebanon,31 tall and lofty,32 and all the oaks of Bashan,33 14 for all the towering mountains and all the high hills,34 15 for every lofty tower35 and every fortified wall,36 16 for every trading shipb37 and every stately vessel. 17 The arrogance of man will be brought low38 and the pride of men humbled;39 the LORD alone will be exalted in that day,40 18 and the idols41 will totally disappear.42 19 Men will flee to caves43 in the rocks and to holes in the ground44 from dread45 of the LORD and the splendor of his majesty,46 when he rises to shake the earth.47 20 In that day48 men will throw away to the rodents and bats49 their idols of silver and idols of gold,50 which they made to worship.51 21 They will flee to caverns in the rocks52 and to the overhanging crags from dread of the LORD and the splendor of his majesty,53 when he rises54 to shake the earth.55 22 Stop trusting in man,56 who has but a breath57 in his nostrils. Of what account is he?58
