He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows,1 and familiar with suffering.2 Like one from whom men hide3 their faces he was despised,4 and we esteemed him not.
Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows,5 yet we considered him stricken by God,6 smitten by him, and afflicted.75
But he was pierced8 for our transgressions,9 he was crushed10 for our iniquities; the punishment11 that brought us peace12 was upon him, and by his wounds13 we are healed.146
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,15 each of us has turned to his own way;16 and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity17 of us all.
He was oppressed18 and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth;19 he was led like a lamb20 to the slaughter,21 and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
By oppressiona and judgment22 he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living;23 for the transgression24 of my people he was stricken.b9
He was assigned a grave with the wicked,25 and with the rich26 in his death, though he had done no violence,27 nor was any deceit in his mouth.2810
Yet it was the LORD's will29 to crush30 him and cause him to suffer,31 and though the LORD makesc his life a guilt offering,32 he will see his offspring33 and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper34 in his hand.
After the suffering35 of his soul, he will see the light36 [of life]d and be satisfiede; by his knowledgef my righteous servant37 will justify38 many, and he will bear their iniquities.3912
Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,g40 and he will divide the spoils41 with the strong,h because he poured out his life unto death,42 and was numbered with the transgressors.43 For he bore44 the sin of many,45 and made intercession46 for the transgressors.
