Those who walk uprightly1 enter into peace; they find rest2 as they lie in death.
"But you--come here, you sons of a sorceress,3 you offspring of adulterers4 and prostitutes!54
Whom are you mocking? At whom do you sneer and stick out your tongue? Are you not a brood of rebels,6 the offspring of liars?
You burn with lust among the oaks7 and under every spreading tree;8 you sacrifice your children9 in the ravines and under the overhanging crags.
[The idols]10 among the smooth stones of the ravines are your portion; they, they are your lot. Yes, to them you have poured out drink offerings11 and offered grain offerings. In the light of these things, should I relent?127
You have made your bed on a high and lofty hill;13 there you went up to offer your sacrifices.148
Behind your doors and your doorposts you have put your pagan symbols. Forsaking me, you uncovered your bed, you climbed into it and opened it wide; you made a pact with those whose beds you love,15 and you looked on their nakedness.169
You went to Molecha17 with olive oil and increased your perfumes.18 You sent your ambassadorsb19 far away; you descended to the gravec20 itself !
You were wearied21 by all your ways, but you would not say, 'It is hopeless.'22 You found renewal of your strength,23 and so you did not faint.
"Whom have you so dreaded and feared24 that you have been false to me, and have neither remembered25 me nor pondered26 this in your hearts? Is it not because I have long been silent27 that you do not fear me?
I will expose your righteousness and your works,28 and they will not benefit you.
