You burn with lust among the oaks1 and under every spreading tree;2 you sacrifice your children3 in the ravines and under the overhanging crags.
[The idols]4 among the smooth stones of the ravines are your portion; they, they are your lot. Yes, to them you have poured out drink offerings5 and offered grain offerings. In the light of these things, should I relent?67
You have made your bed on a high and lofty hill;7 there you went up to offer your sacrifices.88
Behind your doors and your doorposts you have put your pagan symbols. Forsaking me, you uncovered your bed, you climbed into it and opened it wide; you made a pact with those whose beds you love,9 and you looked on their nakedness.109
You went to Molecha11 with olive oil and increased your perfumes.12 You sent your ambassadorsb13 far away; you descended to the gravec14 itself !
You were wearied15 by all your ways, but you would not say, 'It is hopeless.'16 You found renewal of your strength,17 and so you did not faint.
"Whom have you so dreaded and feared18 that you have been false to me, and have neither remembered19 me nor pondered20 this in your hearts? Is it not because I have long been silent21 that you do not fear me?
I will expose your righteousness and your works,22 and they will not benefit you.
When you cry out23 for help, let your collection [of idols] save24 you! The wind will carry all of them off, a mere breath will blow25 them away. But the man who makes me his refuge26 will inherit the land27 and possess my holy mountain."28
And it will be said: "Build up, build up, prepare the road!29 Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people."3015
For this is what the high and lofty31 One says-- he who lives forever,32 whose name is holy: "I live in a high33 and holy place, but also with him who is contrite34 and lowly in spirit,35 to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.36
