Then I heard the voice1 of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send?2 And who will go for us?3" And I said, "Here am I.4 Send me!"
He said, "Go5 and tell this people: " 'Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.'610
Make the heart of this people calloused;7 make their ears dull and close their eyes.a8 Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears,9 understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed."1011
Then I said, "For how long, O Lord?"11 And he answered: "Until the cities lie ruined12 and without inhabitant, until the houses are left deserted13 and the fields ruined and ravaged,1412
until the LORD has sent everyone far away15 and the land is utterly forsaken.1613
And though a tenth remains17 in the land, it will again be laid waste.18 But as the terebinth and oak leave stumps19 when they are cut down, so the holy20 seed will be the stump in the land."21
