Then I went to the prophetess,1 and she conceived and gave birth to a son.2 And the LORD said to me, "Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.34
Before the boy knows4 how to say 'My father' or 'My mother,' the wealth of Damascus5 and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.6"
The LORD spoke to me again:
"Because this people has rejected7 the gently flowing waters of Shiloah8 and rejoices over Rezin and the son of Remaliah,97
therefore the Lord is about to bring against them the mighty floodwaters10 of the Rivera-- the king of Assyria11 with all his pomp.12 It will overflow all its channels, run over all its banks138
and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it,14 passing through it and reaching up to the neck. Its outspread wings15 will cover the breadth of your land, O Immanuelb !"169
Raise the war cry,c17 you nations, and be shattered!18 Listen, all you distant lands. Prepare19 for battle, and be shattered! Prepare for battle, and be shattered!
Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted;20 propose your plan, but it will not stand,21 for God is with us.d22
The LORD spoke to me with his strong hand upon me,23 warning me not to follow24 the way of this people. He said:
"Do not call conspiracy25 everything that these people call conspiracye; do not fear what they fear,26 and do not dread it.2713
The LORD Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy,28 he is the one you are to fear,29 he is the one you are to dread,30
