Marcos 14

1 Y dos días después era la Pascua y los días de los panes sin levadura; y procuraban los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los escribas cómo le prenderían por engaño, y le matarían

2 Y decían: No en el día de la fiesta, para que no se haga alboroto del pueblo

3 Y estando él en Betania, en casa de Simón el leproso, y sentado a la mesa, vino una mujer teniendo un alabastro de ungüento de nardo espique de mucho precio; y quebrando el alabastro, se lo derramó sobre su cabeza

4 Y hubo algunos que se enojaron dentro de sí, y dijeron: ¿Para qué se ha hecho este desperdicio de ungüento

5 Porque podía esto ser vendido por más de trescientos denarios, y darse a los pobres. Y murmuraban contra ella

6 Mas Jesús dijo: Dejadla; ¿por qué la fatigáis? Buena obra me ha hecho

7 que siempre tendréis los pobres con vosotros, y cuando quisiereis les podréis hacer bien; mas a mí no siempre me tendréis

8 Esta ha hecho lo que podía; porque se ha anticipado a ungir mi cuerpo para la sepultura

9 De cierto os digo que dondequiera que fuere predicado este Evangelio en todo el mundo, también esto que ha hecho ésta, será dicho para memoria de ella

10 Entonces Judas Iscariote, uno de los doce, vino a los príncipes de los sacerdotes, para entregárselo

11 Y ellos oyéndolo se alegraron, y prometieron que le darían dinero. Y buscaba oportunidad de cómo le entregaría

12 Y el primer día de la fiesta de los panes sin levadura, cuando sacrificaban la Pascua, sus discípulos le dicen: ¿Dónde quieres que vayamos a disponer para que comas la pascua

13 Y envía dos de sus discípulos, y les dice: Id a la ciudad, y os encontrará un hombre que lleva un cántaro de agua; seguidle

14 y donde entrare, decid al padre de familia: El Maestro dice: ¿Dónde está el aposento donde he de comer la Pascua con mis discípulos

15 Y él os mostrará un gran cenáculo ya preparado; aderezad para nosotros allí

16 Y fueron sus discípulos, y vinieron a la ciudad, y hallaron como les había dicho; y aderezaron la Pascua

17 Y llegada la tarde, fue con los doce

18 Y cuando se sentaron a la mesa y comieron, dijo Jesús: De cierto os digo que uno de vosotros, que come conmigo, me ha de entregar

19 Entonces ellos comenzaron a entristecerse, y a decirle cada uno por sí, por ventura: ¿Seré yo? Y el otro: ¿Seré yo

20 Y él respondiendo les dijo: Es uno de los doce que moja conmigo en el plato

21 A la verdad el Hijo del hombre va, como está de él escrito; pero ¡ay de aquel hombre por quien el Hijo del hombre es entregado! Bueno le fuera a aquel hombre si nunca hubiera nacido

22 Y estando ellos comiendo, tomó Jesús pan, y bendiciendo, partió y les dio, y dijo: Tomad, comed, esto es mi cuerpo

23 Y tomando el vaso, habiendo dado gracias, les dio; y bebieron de él todos

24 Y les dice: Esto es mi sangre del Nuevo Testamento, que por muchos es derramada

25 De cierto os digo que no beberé más del fruto de la vid, hasta aquel día, cuando lo beberé nuevo en el Reino de Dios

26 Y cuando hubieron cantado el himno, salieron al Monte de las Olivas

27 Jesús entonces les dice: Todos seréis escandalizados en mí esta noche; porque escrito está: Heriré al pastor, y serán derramadas las ovejas

28 Mas después que haya resucitado, iré delante de vosotros a Galilea

29 Entonces Pedro le dijo: Aunque todos sean escandalizados, yo no

30 Y le dice Jesús: De cierto te digo hoy, en esta noche, antes que el gallo haya cantado dos veces, tú me negarás tres veces

31 Mas él con mayor porfía decía: Si me fuere menester morir contigo, no te negaré. También todos decían lo mismo

32 Y vienen al lugar que se llama Getsemaní, y dice a sus discípulos: Sentaos aquí, entre tanto que yo oro

33 Y toma consigo a Pedro y a Jacobo y a Juan, y comenzó a atemorizarse, y a angustiarse

34 Y les dice: Está muy triste mi alma, hasta la muerte; esperad aquí y velad

35 Y yéndose un poco adelante, se postró en tierra, y oró, que si fuera posible, pasara de él aquella hora

36 Y decía: Abba, Padre, todas las cosas son a ti posibles; traspasa de mí este vaso; mas no lo que yo quiero, sino lo que tú

37 Y vino y los halló durmiendo; y dice a Pedro: ¿Simón, duermes? ¿No has podido velar una hora

38 Velad y orad, para que no entréis en tentación; el espíritu a la verdad es presto, mas la carne enferma

39 Y volviéndose a ir, oró, y dijo las mismas palabras

40 Y vuelto, los halló otra vez durmiendo, porque los ojos de ellos estaban cargados; y no sabían qué responderle

41 Y vino la tercera vez, y les dice: Dormid ya y descansad. Basta, la hora es venida; he aquí, el Hijo del hombre es entregado en manos de los pecadores

42 Levantaos, vamos; he aquí, el que me entrega está cerca

43 Y luego, aún hablando él, vino Judas, que era uno de los doce, y con él una multitud con espadas y palos, de parte de los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y de los escribas y de los ancianos

44 Y el que le entregaba les había dado señal común, diciendo: Al que yo besare, aquel es: prendedle, y llevadle con seguridad

45 Y como vino, se acercó luego a él, y le dijo: Maestro, Maestro. Y le besó

46 Entonces ellos echaron en él sus manos, y le prendieron

47 Y uno de los que estaban allí, sacando la espada, hirió al siervo del sumo sacerdote; y le cortó la oreja

48 Y respondiendo Jesús, les dijo: ¿Cómo a ladrón habéis salido con espadas y con palos a tomarme

49 Cada día estaba con vosotros enseñando en el Templo, y no me tomasteis; pero es así, para que se cumplan las Escrituras

50 Entonces dejándole todos sus discípulos, huyeron

51 Pero un joven le seguía cubierto de una sábana sobre el cuerpo desnudo; y los mancebos le prendieron

52 mas él, dejando la sábana, huyó de ellos desnudo

53 Y trajeron a Jesús al sumo sacerdote; y se juntaron a él todos los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos y los escribas

54 Pero Pedro le siguió de lejos hasta dentro del patio del sumo sacerdote; y estaba sentado con los servidores, y calentándose al fuego

55 Y los príncipes de los sacerdotes y todo el concilio buscaban algún testimonio contra Jesús, para entregarle a la muerte; pero no lo hallaban

56 Porque muchos decían falso testimonio contra él; mas sus testimonios no concertaban

57 Entonces levantándose unos, dieron falso testimonio contra él, diciendo

58 Nosotros le hemos oído decir: Yo derribaré este Templo, que es hecho de manos, y en tres días edificaré otro hecho sin manos

59 Mas ni aun así se concertaba el testimonio de ellos

60 Entonces el sumo sacerdote, levantándose en medio, preguntó a Jesús, diciendo: ¿No respondes algo? ¿Qué atestiguan éstos contra ti

61 Mas él callaba, y nada respondía. El sumo sacerdote le volvió a preguntar, y le dijo: ¿Eres tú el Cristo, el Hijo del Bendito

62 Y Jesús le dijo: YO SOY; y veréis al Hijo del hombre sentado a la diestra de la Potencia de Dios, y viniendo en las nubes del cielo

63 Entonces el sumo sacerdote, rasgando sus vestidos, dijo: ¿Qué más necesidad tenemos de testigos

64 Habéis oído la blasfemia: ¿qué os parece? Y todos ellos le condenaron para ser culpado de muerte

65 Y algunos comenzaron a escupir en él, y cubrir su rostro, y a darle bofetadas, y decirle: Profetiza. Y los servidores le herían de bofetadas

66 Y estando Pedro en el palacio abajo, vino una de las criadas del sumo sacerdote

67 y cuando vio a Pedro que se calentaba, mirándole, dice: Y tú con Jesús el Nazareno estabas

68 Mas él negó, diciendo: No lo conozco, ni sé lo que dices. Y salió fuera a la entrada; y cantó el gallo

69 Y la criada viéndole otra vez, comenzó a decir a los que estaban allí: Este es de ellos

70 Mas él negó otra vez. Y poco después, los que estaban allí dijeron otra vez a Pedro: Verdaderamente tú eres de ellos; porque eres Galileo, y tu habla es semejante

71 Y él comenzó a maldecir y a jurar: No conozco a este hombre de quien habláis

72 Y el gallo cantó la segunda vez; y Pedro se acordó de las palabras que Jesús le había dicho: Antes que el gallo cante dos veces, me negarás tres veces. Y pensando en esto, lloraba

Marcos 14 Commentary

Chapter 14

Christ anointed at Bethany. (1-11) The passover, Jesus declares that Judas would betray him. (12-21) The Lord's supper instituted. (22-31) Christ's agony in the garden. (32-42) He is betrayed and taken. (43-52) Christ before the high priest. (53-65) Peter denies Christ. (66-72)

Verses 1-11 Did Christ pour out his soul unto death for us, and shall we think any thing too precious for him? Do we give him the precious ointment of our best affections? Let us love him with all the heart, though it is common for zeal and affection to be misunderstood and blamed; and remember that charity to the poor will not excuse any from particular acts of piety to the Lord Jesus. Christ commended this woman's pious attention to the notice of believers in all ages. Those who honour Christ he will honour. Covetousness was Judas' master lust, and that betrayed him to the sin of betraying his Master; the devil suited his temptation to that, and so conquered him. And see what wicked contrivances many have in their sinful pursuits; but what appears to forward their plans, will prove curses in the end.

Verses 12-21 Nothing could be less the result of human foresight than the events here related. But our Lord knows all things about us before they come to pass. If we admit him, he will dwell in our hearts. The Son of man goes, as it is written of him, as a lamb to the slaughter; but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed! God's permitting the sins of men, and bringing glory to himself out of them, does not oblige them to sin; nor will this be any excuse for their guilt, or lessen their punishment.

Verses 22-31 The Lord's supper is food for the soul, therefore a very little of that which is for the body, as much as will serve for a sign, is enough. It was instituted by the example and the practice of our Master, to remain in force till his second coming. It was instituted with blessing and giving of thanks, to be a memorial of Christ's death. Frequent mention is made of his precious blood, as the price of our redemption. How comfortable is this to poor repenting sinners, that the blood of Christ is shed for many! If for many, why not for me? It was a sign of the conveyance of the benefits purchased for us by his death. Apply the doctrine of Christ crucified to yourselves; let it be meat and drink to your souls, strengthening and refreshing your spiritual life. It was to be an earnest and foretaste of the happiness of heaven, and thereby to put us out of taste for the pleasures and delights of sense. Every one that has tasted spiritual delights, straightway desires eternal ones. Though the great Shepherd passed through his sufferings without one false step, yet his followers often have been scattered by the small measure of sufferings allotted to them. How very apt we are to think well of ourselves, and to trust our own hearts! It was ill done of Peter thus to answer his Master, and not with fear and trembling. Lord, give me grace to keep me from denying thee.

Verses 32-42 Christ's sufferings began with the sorest of all, those in his soul. He began to be sorely amazed; words not used in St. Matthew, but very full of meaning. The terrors of God set themselves in array against him, and he allowed him to contemplate them. Never was sorrow like unto his at this time. Now he was made a curse for us; the curses of the law were laid upon him as our Surety. He now tasted death, in all the bitterness of it. This was that fear of which the apostle speaks, the natural fear of pain and death, at which human nature startles. Can we ever entertain favourable, or even slight thoughts of sin, when we see the painful sufferings which sin, though but reckoned to him, brought on the Lord Jesus? Shall that sit light upon our souls, which sat so heavy upon his? Was Christ in such agony for our sins, and shall we never be in agony about them? How should we look upon Him whom we have pierced, and mourn! It becomes us to be exceedingly sorrowful for sin, because He was so, and never to mock at it. Christ, as Man, pleaded, that, if it were possible, his sufferings might pass from him. As Mediator, he submitted to the will of God, saying, Nevertheless, not what I will, but what thou wilt; I bid it welcome. See how the sinful weakness of Christ's disciples returns, and overpowers them. What heavy clogs these bodies of ours are to our souls! But when we see trouble at the door, we should get ready for it. Alas, even believers often look at the Redeemer's sufferings in a drowsy manner, and instead of being ready to die with Christ, they are not even prepared to watch with him one hour.

Verses 43-52 Because Christ appeared not as a temporal prince, but preached repentance, reformation, and a holy life, and directed men's thoughts, and affections, and aims to another world, therefore the Jewish rulers sought to destroy him. Peter wounded one of the band. It is easier to fight for Christ than to die for him. But there is a great difference between faulty disciples and hypocrites. The latter rashly and without thought call Christ Master, and express great affection for him, yet betray him to his enemies. Thus they hasten their own destruction.

Verses 53-65 We have here Christ's condemnation before the great council of the Jews. Peter followed; but the high priest's fire-side was no proper place, nor his servants proper company, for Peter: it was an entrance into temptation. Great diligence was used to procure false witnesses against Jesus, yet their testimony was not equal to the charge of a capital crime, by the utmost stretch of their law. He was asked, Art thou the Son of the Blessed? that is, the Son of God. For the proof of his being the Son of God, he refers to his second coming. In these outrages we have proofs of man's enmity to God, and of God's free and unspeakable love to man.

Verses 66-72 Peter's denying Christ began by keeping at a distance from him. Those that are shy of godliness, are far in the way to deny Christ. Those who think it dangerous to be in company with Christ's disciples, because thence they may be drawn in to suffer for him, will find it much more dangerous to be in company with his enemies, because there they may be drawn in to sin against him. When Christ was admired and flocked after, Peter readily owned him; but will own no relation to him now he is deserted and despised. Yet observe, Peter's repentance was very speedy. Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall; and let him that has fallen think of these things, and of his own offences, and return to the Lord with weeping and supplication, seeking forgiveness, and to be raised up by the Holy Spirit.
