"Now therefore say to the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, 'This is what the LORD says: Look! I am preparing a disaster1 for you and devising a plan2 against you. So turn3 from your evil ways,4 each one of you, and reform your ways and your actions.'512
But they will reply, 'It's no use.6 We will continue with our own plans; each of us will follow the stubbornness of his evil heart.7' "
Therefore this is what the LORD says: "Inquire among the nations: Who has ever heard anything like this?8 A most horrible9 thing has been done by Virgin10 Israel.
Does the snow of Lebanon ever vanish from its rocky slopes? Do its cool waters from distant sources ever cease to flow?a15
Yet my people have forgotten11 me; they burn incense12 to worthless idols,13 which made them stumble14 in their ways and in the ancient paths.15 They made them walk in bypaths and on roads not built up.1616
Their land will be laid waste,17 an object of lasting scorn;18 all who pass by will be appalled19 and will shake their heads.2017
Like a wind21 from the east, I will scatter them before their enemies; I will show them my back and not my face22 in the day of their disaster."
They said, "Come, let's make plans23 against Jeremiah; for the teaching of the law by the priest24 will not be lost, nor will counsel from the wise,25 nor the word from the prophets.26 So come, let's attack him with our tongues27 and pay no attention to anything he says."
Listen to me, O LORD; hear what my accusers28 are saying!
Should good be repaid with evil?29 Yet they have dug a pit30 for me. Remember that I stood31 before you and spoke in their behalf32 to turn your wrath away from them.
So give their children over to famine;33 hand them over to the power of the sword.34 Let their wives be made childless and widows;35 let their men be put to death, their young men36 slain by the sword in battle.
