He defended the cause of the poor and needy,1 and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know2 me?" declares the LORD.
"But your eyes and your heart are set only on dishonest gain,3 on shedding innocent blood4 and on oppression and extortion."518
Therefore this is what the LORD says about Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah: "They will not mourn6 for him: 'Alas, my brother! Alas, my sister!' They will not mourn for him: 'Alas, my master! Alas, his splendor!'
He will have the burial7 of a donkey-- dragged away and thrown8 outside the gates of Jerusalem."
"Go up to Lebanon and cry out,9 let your voice be heard in Bashan,10 cry out from Abarim,11 for all your allies12 are crushed.
I warned you when you felt secure,13 but you said, 'I will not listen!' This has been your way from your youth;14 you have not obeyed15 me.
The wind16 will drive all your shepherds17 away, and your allies18 will go into exile. Then you will be ashamed and disgraced19 because of all your wickedness.
You who live in 'Lebanon,a20' who are nestled in cedar buildings, how you will groan when pangs come upon you, pain21 like that of a woman in labor!
"As surely as I live," declares the LORD, "even if you, Jehoiachinb22 son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, were a signet ring23 on my right hand, I would still pull you off.
I will hand you over24 to those who seek your life, those you fear--to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to the Babylonians.c26
I will hurl25 you and the mother26 who gave you birth into another country, where neither of you was born, and there you both will die.
