to Kerioth1 and Bozrah2-- to all the towns3 of Moab, far and near.
Moab's horna4 is cut off; her arm5 is broken," declares the LORD.
"Make her drunk,6 for she has defied7 the LORD. Let Moab wallow in her vomit;8 let her be an object of ridicule.927
Was not Israel the object of your ridicule?10 Was she caught among thieves,11 that you shake your head12 in scorn13 whenever you speak of her?
Abandon your towns and dwell among the rocks, you who live in Moab. Be like a dove14 that makes its nest at the mouth of a cave.1529
"We have heard of Moab's pride16-- her overweening pride and conceit, her pride and arrogance and the haughtiness17 of her heart.
I know her insolence but it is futile," declares the LORD, "and her boasts18 accomplish nothing.
Therefore I wail19 over Moab, for all Moab I cry out, I moan for the men of Kir Hareseth.2032
I weep for you, as Jazer21 weeps, O vines of Sibmah.22 Your branches spread as far as the sea; they reached as far as the sea of Jazer. The destroyer has fallen on your ripened fruit and grapes.
Joy and gladness are gone from the orchards and fields of Moab. I have stopped the flow of wine23 from the presses; no one treads them with shouts of joy.24 Although there are shouts, they are not shouts of joy.
"The sound of their cry rises from Heshbon25 to Elealeh26 and Jahaz,27 from Zoar28 as far as Horonaim29 and Eglath Shelishiyah, for even the waters of Nimrim are dried up.30
