your mother will be greatly ashamed; she who gave you birth will be disgraced.1 She will be the least of the nations-- a wilderness, a dry land, a desert.213
Because of the LORD's anger she will not be inhabited but will be completely desolate.3 All who pass Babylon will be horrified4 and scoff5 because of all her wounds.614
"Take up your positions around Babylon, all you who draw the bow.7 Shoot at her! Spare no arrows,8 for she has sinned against the LORD.
Shout9 against her on every side! She surrenders, her towers fall, her walls10 are torn down. Since this is the vengeance11 of the LORD, take vengeance on her; do to her12 as she has done to others.1316
Cut off from Babylon the sower, and the reaper with his sickle at harvest. Because of the sword14 of the oppressor let everyone return to his own people,15 let everyone flee to his own land.1617
"Israel is a scattered flock17 that lions18 have chased away. The first to devour19 him was the king20 of Assyria; the last to crush his bones21 was Nebuchadnezzar22 king23 of Babylon."
Therefore this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: "I will punish the king of Babylon and his land as I punished the king24 of Assyria.2519
But I will bring26 Israel back to his own pasture and he will graze on Carmel and Bashan; his appetite will be satisfied27 on the hills28 of Ephraim and Gilead.2920
In those days, at that time," declares the LORD, "search will be made for Israel's guilt, but there will be none,30 and for the sins31 of Judah, but none will be found, for I will forgive32 the remnant33 I spare.
"Attack the land of Merathaim and those who live in Pekod.34 Pursue, kill and completely destroya them," declares the LORD. "Do everything I have commanded you.
The noise35 of battle is in the land, the noise of great destruction!
