"Even now," declares the LORD, "return1 to me with all your heart,2 with fasting and weeping and mourning."
Rend your heart3 and not your garments.4 Return5 to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate,6 slow to anger and abounding in love,7 and he relents from sending calamity.8
Who knows? He may turn9 and have pity10 and leave behind a blessing11-- grain offerings and drink offerings12 for the LORD your God.
Blow the trumpet13 in Zion,14 declare a holy fast,15 call a sacred assembly.16
Gather the people, consecrate17 the assembly; bring together the elders,18 gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom19 leave his room and the bride her chamber.
Let the priests, who minister20 before the LORD, weep21 between the temple porch and the altar.22 Let them say, "Spare your people, O LORD. Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn,23 a byword24 among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, 'Where is their God?25' "
Then the LORD will be jealous26 for his land and take pity27 on his people.
The LORD will reply to them: "I am sending you grain, new wine28 and oil,29 enough to satisfy you fully;30 never again will I make you an object of scorn31 to the nations.
"I will drive the northern army32 far from you, pushing it into a parched and barren land, with its front columns going into the eastern33 sea and those in the rear into the western sea. And its stench34 will go up; its smell will rise." Surely he has done great things.
Be not afraid,35 O land; be glad and rejoice.36 Surely the LORD has done great things.37
Be not afraid, O wild animals, for the open pastures are becoming green.38 The trees are bearing their fruit; the fig tree39 and the vine40 yield their riches.41
