John 7:25

25 Then one of those of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill?

John 7:25 Meaning and Commentary

John 7:25

Then said some of them of Jerusalem
Who were inhabitants of Jerusalem, and so are distinguished from the people, ( John 7:20 ) , who came up out of the country to the feast; so Jose ben Jochanan is called (Mylvwry vya) , "a man of Jerusalem" F3; that is, an inhabitant of it: now these men living in the city, knew more of the temper and disposition, the designs and attempts, of the chief priests, Scribes, and elders, to take away the life of Christ; and therefore say,

is not this he whom they seek to kill?
they knew that they had formed a design to kill him, ever since the passover before the last; when he wrought the miracle referred to in the text, and that they had been ever since plotting against his life, and were now at this feast seeking an opportunity to lay hold on him and kill him.

John 7:25 In-Context

23 If a man on the sabbath day receives circumcision without the law of Moses being broken, are ye angry at me because I have made a man entirely whole on the sabbath day?
24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.
25 Then one of those of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill?
26 But, behold, he speaks boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Have the rulers truly understood that this is indeed the Christ?
27 But we know where this man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one shall know where he is from.
