The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah,1 Benjamin and the house of Ephraim;2 and Israel was in great distress.
Then the Israelites cried3 out to the LORD, "We have sinned4 against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals."511
The LORD replied, "When the Egyptians,6 the Amorites,7 the Ammonites,8 the Philistines,912
the Sidonians, the Amalekites10 and the Maonitesa11 oppressed you12 and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands?
But you have forsaken13 me and served other gods,14 so I will no longer save you.
Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save15 you when you are in trouble!16"
But the Israelites said to the LORD, "We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best,17 but please rescue us now."
Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the LORD.18 And he could bear Israel's misery19 no longer.2017
When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.2118
The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, "Whoever will launch the attack against the Ammonites will be the head22 of all those living in Gilead."
